I have been dating my current girlfriend for about 6.5 years. When we first met we had an amazing relationship and you couldn’t pull us away from each other. However, over time as we both went to school and she eventually entered the working world and I continued with more schooling I noticed that our relationship has slowly been creeping apart. Between her working and me going to school it just seems like we don’t have the same amount of quality time as we did before. However, we have always stuck it out through the good and bad.
I guess this is where the problem or crossroads comes in. As my gf has been working for a couple years, she is wanting to move to the next phase of her life: get married, having kids, settling down. She also has a pretty good job that she likes and is very close to her family so she is absolutely against moving to another state. On the other hand, as I have been in school for a really long time, I am just sort of burned out and want to take some time to get my self back together and do some traveling. Also, many of the jobs that I am interesting in pursing are not located in the city in which I live. Additionally, I have always dreamed of moving somewhere different as I have always lived where I am currently located and it is just one of those things that I know I would regret later in my life if I didn’t do it. Another thing is that I want to “establish myself” financially before I think about having kids (building up some savings, get some equity in a house, etc…)
I just feel very torn. I know that if I don’t get out of where I currently live and see the world I never will but if I do that I risk losing my gf and if I stay I will always regret not going? I feel like I lose out either way. I just feel like we are at different points in our lives.
I have tried to talk to her about it both casually and seriously and she just becomes very angry every time we talk about it. Something along the lines of “I have waited for you all this time and now your going to do this.”
Any suggestions on what I can do? I understand that a relationship requires compromise but I just can’t figure out what would work in this situation?
