Mark:
Bishop Fulton Sheen wrote that Christ’s flesh was wounded to counter and mortify for all of the sins of the flesh. He said that the nails on the feet are for our wayward directions that we fall into, the nailed hands are for the sins committed by our hands, the lance to the side of Christ is for the pain that we cause each other and the thorny crown is for all of our sinful thoughts…Christ truly is the redeemer of every man in this regard.
When we do our examination of conscience at night maybe we can reflect on the sins that we’ve committed and attribute that to the particular suffering that Christ needed to atone for so we can qualify for forgiveness. This can bring our hearts to a true contrition.
Hope that helps a little.
