Crucified through the hands or wrists?

Others on here have cited Dr. Pierre Barbet and his book Doctor at Calvary as their only source – and the work from which Discovery channel and others have based their programs. But Dr. Barbet worked in the 1930’s. Others have come after him (Dr. Frederick Zugibe’s, Ronald L. Conte Jr, et al ) who have shown that Barbet only did one experiment – he nailed an amputated arm on a beam and then dropped an 88lb weight from it and the flesh tore. But, that arm was amputated because it was diseased and his work was not reproducible nor were typical lad methods followed. Yet, LOTS of people accept it as Truth.

The later scientists have said the heal of the hand (which is the anatomical wrist – not the area where someone wears a wristwatch) would be the most likely place for where the nail came through so as to fulfill the prophecy that no bones were broken.

Did you have a chance to read any of the earlier posts???

Hope you have a great Easter.

Did not too many but very insightful thank you. I guess my source is whack! Too bad newer stuff is not attested to…I wonder why?

I don’t know.
But I do watch programs on Discovery channel and take what they say with a grain of salt . . . . like the one where the world is going to end in 2012 . . or how Nostradamus predicted Sept 11 . . . . .

Well I usually find that on the History Channel…so much for History but its all the same I suppose

Are you folks still trying to figure this out?

Go to bed. 😃

Have a blessed Holy Week, everyone! 👍

Fraternally,

Nope. I already declared that you were right about 10 posts ago, Br. JR.

And now since you’ve said so, I will obey and get some sleep.

A blessed Holy Week to all!

I just listened to Dr. Niels Svensson a medical expert on Catholic Answers Live. He stated Jesus was nailed to the cross through the wrists.

Personally, I think that he may be influenced by Pierre Barbet (as many still are) on this point. But that’s just my opinion. 🤷

You’re right. Many people are influenced by his research including me. Let’s be clear that his research and the research of Dr. Niels Svensson are based on the Shroud of Turin which I also believe is 100% authentic.

But the other important thing to remember is many people today hear the word “wrist” and think of the place where one wears a wristwatch. That was not what any of these scientists meant – they all meant theanatomical wrist which is the heal of the hand. That is the only place that could have been nailed through so as to fulfill the prophecy that “ot a bone shall be broken.”

The thing that freightens me when people make such statements is that it seems arrogant or just plain foolhardy. I am fairly certain Dr. Svensson was not present for the Crucifixion so how can he claim to be 100% certain about any of the details? The Gospel writers don’t offer specifics so how can someone else be so bold as to state they know exactly what happened in an event from 2000 years ago? It wuold be Dr. Svensson’s OPINION, not fact.

The only facts we can be 100% certain of are that Jesus loves us enough to have died for us on a cross and that He conquered death by rising again.

Peace!

Sorry Suslar, I wasn’t clear. I was not saying that Dr. Niels Svensson or Dr. Barbet have claimed to be 100% certain.

What I was trying to say is that I personally am 100% convinced that the Shroud of Turin is authentic.

I am also 100% in agreement with you regarding:

When Jesus appeared as the Divine Mercy to Saint Faustina, His wounds were in his hands, look at the image of Him.

That’s not a guarantee that he was nailed through the palm of his hand. I’m not denying the he was. I doesn’t make any difference to me. Through the hands or the wrist, it’s still a barbaric way for an innocent man to die.

Where I’m going with this is that visions always come in images that the person understands. For example:

Juan Diego: Mary was a pregnant Native American girl

Francis of Assisi: Jesus has six wings and is wounded through the wrists; Jesus is leper

Bernadette: Mary is typical European Caucasian adult woman

Teresa of Avila: Jesus is a Spanish boy about age 10

Simon Stock: Mary is a Middle Eastern woman wearing the typical hermit’s garb worn by the hermits of Mt. Carmel, brown sack cloth.

We know that Jesus never had leprosy. Mary was never in the Americas nor in Europe. We know that Middle Eastern women have very distinct features from those of European women. Jesus was not a seraph, but what Francis sees is Jesus as seraph.

Visions are meant to be understood by the visionary. That’s why they’re considered private and the Church does not rely on them for facts.

We can conclude that until we meet Jesus we will not know for sure how he was crucified. Do we need to know? The Church doesn’t think it’s important at all. That fact that he died a barbaric death for sins that we committed, not he, is all that we need to know. This week, of all weeks, we should spend more time thinking each of our sins that caused such a horrible death than the place of the nails.

If you ask his mother, she will probably say that what hurt her the most was that her son died for something that he did not do, not the place where they put the nails. Yet, she remains totally silent at the foot of the cross, because she loves those whom her son loves. She was moved by love, not details.

Not trying to inflame the debate… but, regarding linguistics…

In Indonesian, “cheir” (Greek) is translated as “tangan,” which means “hand.”
But, the term “tangan” have broad meaning, including the whole “arm.”

We do have different word for “arm” (“lengan” in Indonesian) or “wrist” (“pergelangan tangan” in Indonesian). But still the broad meaning of “tangan” do not vanish.

Interesting no?

Hi everyone,

Yes, yes, I KNOW this questions has been asked before (like every year just before Holy Week, right?) But this time, I can’t find the old threads.

So, please answer ONLY if you can cite references to relevant factual material – I’m not in need of opinions.

The question is - Can you cite proof of Christ being crucified through either His hands or His wrists?

Thanks!
I think through His wrists, I remember clearly that my priest that had explained us detailly, when I was in regular school, and after I have heard so many times through His wrists, in Gospel you have that, no one schelet will crash Him.

Dear Marica,
Please read the previous posts. There is absolutely no answer to this question anywhere in the Bible except for the prophecy from the Old Testament that says “not a bone shall be broken.” The authors of the Gospels did not address this topic.
