I have been considering getting a MM to wear, but I am confused about the scapular. Are we required to wear one? I had one as a child but I didn’t know much about it or why I was supposed to wear it.

No one is required to wear the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. I assume you got one at your first communion, right? That’s a fine thing for the kids to receive, but many don’t absorb what it is or why they were given it or what to do with it. Anyway, the Scapular is meant to show you intend to live your baptismal vows with the help and intercession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel under the protection of her mantle. You may wear the cloth scapular or the medal if you wish. You may not have been enrolled in the scapular, so you should talk to a priest about having that done if you decide to wear one again. If you remember being enrolled, all you need do is get one and start wearing it. Whatever you do about it, if you pray about it, you will be fine. Not every devotion is for everyone. Each of us has a spirituality that is helpful to us as individuals. I’d say if you feel called to wear the scapular then by all means do so. I hope that helped. This site describes 3 scapulars, Brown, Miraculous, Green.
It also gives the investiture prayers of the Brown that the priest uses.
If you deceide on the Brown, then print off the investiture prayers so the priest can use
them to invest you with the Brown. This saves time.

The Miraculous Medal does not require an investiture, but it does require a blessing by a priest.

Here is some important info about the Miraculous Medal, one of Mother Theresa’s
favorites.

“Have a medal struck… All who wear it will receive GREAT graces; they should wear it
around the neck. GRACES will ABOUND for persons who wear it with CONFIDENCE.”

The Legion of Mary would know what materials are acceptable for the MM. I’ve seen plastic ones, as well. I would think that since it’s not the habit of a religious order, such as the scapular, that as a sacramental, like the rosary, most materials would be okay. Our Lady asked that a medal be struck, which would mean metal material, but all medals were struck in metal at the time. I doubt she meant only metal could be used, but rather merely wanted to have ones made for the faithful to wear. But again, I’d check with the Legion of Mary for confirmation.

I have seen these as well. The actual medal and forms on it are metallic, but on the front-side it is coated with a thin layer of transparent plastic (I have some with a blue colored hue). I suppose this helps to protect the medal.

If this is the case, then the medal itself is still metallic. I have never seen a MM completely made out of plastic.

I think what’s being described is a silver or silver plated medal with a clear or light blue enamel or plastic coating.
