Crucifix vs a Cross?

A friend is asking me about why Catholics insist on having Jesus on the Cross rather than a plain cross? I am not sure how to answer. I acknowledge that not every Roman Catholic church has every cross with Jesus on it.
I have my idea, but would like another opinion.
