Crucifixes in the Home

SInce I’ve come back to the Church I’ve spent some time and more than some money on sacramentals (standard Catholic starter kit: wall and necklace crucifixes, half a dozen rosaries, missals, etc).

One of my first purchases was a standard Latin crucifix and then I bought a St. Benedict one which I’m starting to think is my favorite, but as I look around I see San Damiano, Papal, Tau, Celtic…

So my question is what is your favorite type of crucifix? Why? Do you prefer a certain type over your bed and another in the living room or in the kitchen?

Never something cheap and tinsy. Generally, I like good old traditional crucifixes, mainly metal ones.
 
I am a self defined sacramentals snob. 😃 I don’t like anything cheap, cheesy, or plastic-y.

I have this one in my guest bedroom, and a similar one, but very art deco in style, in our bedroom.

In the living room and in my office I have very slender and simple silver crucifixes. Still want to get one for the kitchen and a small one for the bathroom over the door.

I actually don’t bother with anything in the home

I strongly believe that that actions and words together help show that I am a Christian and have very little time for symbols of the faith. Each to their own;)

I looked around for the largest crucifix I could find. Finally got one that is approx. 40 inches. I have it hanging in my living room. I love looking at it everyday. 🙂 I also would like one over my entrance doors…

I’ve seen them listed since I bought mine. Look under the “vintage” listings.

I don’t see any out there right now, but check frequently, the listings are always changing.

There’s a large window over our bed and about six square inches of wall space in the kitchen (our condo is this big). But I do have a rather nice sick call crucifix hanging in my office (which triples as the laundry room and my step-daughters’ bedroom when they’re visiting). My grandparents had a heavy wooden sick call crucifix hanging in the upstairs hallway of the home. I’ve always thought it was there for one of those late-night, gathered-around-the-sickbed, might-not-make-it-until-dawn Last Rites scenarios you see in old movies, but as far as I know it never was used for that; both of my grandparents dies in hospitals. But grandma always made sure the holy water bottle in it was full, just in case. And I do, too, even though I’m pretty such there will be no late-night, gathered-round-the-bed Late Rites scenario for me or my husband, either.

I am a big St Benedict’s Cross fan, although I do not have one in my home. A little too pricey for me at the moment. The crosses we have a sentimental and handed down.

Sorry you feel that way englishredrose. I have a small crucifix on each door to my house and on each interior door as well as blessed palms in the house. I have seen with my own eyes the protection they offer. On two separate occasions, my outside doors were open, and a large bolt of lightening came through my living room straight through the room and would have hit the far wall but there were blessed palms on my mantle and the lightening actually backed up and went back through the outside door doing no damage!!! I would have not believed if someone had told me that but I was sitting on the couch holding my baby girl and saw it happen, The second incident happed in the kitchen door a few monhs later. The lightening headed down the basement stairs and there was a small crucifix on the door to the rec room. Same thing happened, it backed up and went outside without hitting anything.So believe me blessed articles of faith do protect our homes.😉

From my computer station, I can see seven (7) crucifix. I have started collecting wall crucifix’s. I can’t match the 40 incher that was mentioned but I do have a very old 28 inch crucifix from a convent that closed up in the NE part f the country. Several of them have come off of coffins of relatives that have passed on.

and yep, I collect rosaries too. 🙂
 
I have 8 wall Crucifixes hanging in my bedroom. I love the Crucifix. The Crucifix is not just a symbol of my faith. It is also a symbol of how sinful I am, and how grateful I am to our Lord, Jesus Christ. Laus, tibi Christe!
 
The first crucifix I bought while I was in RCIA has Our Mother of Sorrows at the foot. It is kind of cheap and plasticy but I can’t tell when I’m just looking at it. It hangs over the bed.

I have another that is a light colored wood with earth from the Holy Land, myrrh, and some other things (can’t remember what they are) at Christ’s feet, hands, and head. This is my favorite one and it’s on the wall right when you walk in.

I have another that is dark colored with a gold/bronze Christ. I got this as a gift from the parish after I finished RCIA. It’s in my living room.

Wow - that’s gargantuan.
 
Since everyone else is showing off their crucifixes, I’ll get into this too. This is one I hung up in my college dorm room. Since we are not supposed to pound nails in the wall, I got some cheap putty stuff to hang it up with, but it was so heavy that it fell off the wall and busted. I immediately bought another one.

There is nothing too special about this, but it is the most detailed crucifix I have ever seen. It really brings Christ’s suffering to life, and sometimes I will just stop during the day and stare at and thank Jesus for dying a terrible, grisly death for all of us.
 
There are so many beautiful ones, but I do keep the St Benedict Cross in my work van & home, plus others…St Benedict, the patron Saint of Exorcists, seems appropriate this day and age…
