Was Our Lord Jesus Christ crucified absolutely naked, bereft of all clothing(even his loin clothes)?

That was the tradition and practice - it was total humiliation. And, it may explain why the women stood at a distance.

I was taught that yes, Our Lord was crucified naked on the cross. Him wrapped in that little cloth in the depictions of Him crucified is for our benefit, because nakedness is still a taboo.

I second Pro18guy, when you were crucified it was total humiliation, and that is what the Romans did.

I heard the crucifixion of Our Lord was in fact far more brutal than any film depiction we’ve seen, even more brutal than what was shown in the Passion of the Christ.

I read an article once that said the Romans went as far as to castrate Our Lord while crucifying Him - in an act of ultimate humiliation for a man.

When the Romans crucified you, it was to send a message.

A historical fact; It is most likely Our Lord was crucified through the wrists, and not through the hands. I read accounts that it would be impossible for the body to hold itself up if you were crucified through the hands, so the Romans crucified you through your wrists.

Recently archeologists unearthed remains of a body that was crucified, and the bones had nails through the back heels.

Bottom line, being crucified by the Romans was one of the worst and most humiliating deaths you could ever imagine.

Taking all this in, one can only imagine how Our Blessed Mother felt at the foot of the Cross.

Also, using nails was the exception, rather than the rule.

Most were simply tied on, and it could take days.

Death actually occurred by asphyxiation, when the body could no longer hold itself up.

And it is indeed the source of the term, “excruciating pain.”

That is incredibly difficult to stomach…but entirely plausible.

Men were usually crucified naked, but naked has different meanings. Was Peter naked in John 21 as the text says or stripped to his underwear? Jesus was the priest offering Himself as a sacrifice and a priest had to cover his loins while ministering, so I believe He had some covering. But He was also the sacrifice and most sacrifices were skinned, but stripping off one’s clothes is the same word as skinning an animal.
Grace and peace,

Yes not only him, but the two thieves as well. Because that was the standard for crucifixions at the time.
