Recently I had occasion attend mass at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Las Vegas, Nevada. While the service very lively and enthusiastic , I was taken back when I noticed that in lieu of the Crucifix behind the Alter there was a Statue of Saint Thomas More. This is the first time I’ve seen something other than the Crucifix. When did become permissible in the tradition of the Church?

That reminds me that the parish next to mine has a miniscule crucifix (I had to search to find it) in front of a large statue of their patron (St. Sebastian). These are behind the altar and above the tabernacle (which, at least) is prominently displayed behind the altar). I’ve always wondered why they feel their patron is more important the Christ.

Nothing prohibits a statue of the Religious Orders founder or patron of the parish from being displayed there. It does require that a traditional Crucifix however be near or on the altar during Mass.
