Hey there! I know that y’all will have some good, tried and true methods for adding lavender or lemon essential oil to the wash. My questions:
-Do you add to the rinse cycle or just at the beginning with your detergent?

-How do you dilute it to add? With vinegar? Or just plain water?

-How much do you need per load?

I’ve been mostly hanging to dry this summer, so I was looking for ways of gently scenting without doing it in the dryer.

Thanks in advance for your help!

I’ve been using an old sock tossed in the wash with a few drops of lavender EO. I do the same in the dryer if it’s a ‘going in the dryer’ load.

I just began using soap nuts which come with a little(I think cotton?) pouch to put them in, and it occurred to me I could just put the EO on that too.

Thanks! so you put that in when you add the clothes and soap, and the scent remains after clothes are dry? A few drops, like 5, or a few like 20?

My dear, if your laundry is “crunchy”, you are doing something wrong.😃

I use 1 cup of white vinegar with 10-15 drops of EO during the rinse cycle.

mmmk guys… I just did a med size wash with the vinegar/EO rinse… I put in about 15 drops of lavender oil. And it was STRONG. the whole house is laden with the scent. Methinks it was a bit too much! I ran it through another rinse cycle with some baking soda to try and tone it down a bit. :o

I use vinegar and EO too. My EO for sheets/pillowcases is lemon with tea tree oil. It has a nice fresh smell. For the rest of the wash I usually use sandalwood. I like lavendar, jasmin, vanilla or gardenia too but my husband finds them too feminine.
BTW, I put about 8-10 drops, sometimes even less. Otherwise I find the smell too strong.

Sadly, I’m horrendously allergic to lemon-scent and a lot of its relatives. If I even get a drip of lemon-scent dishsoap on me, it instantly looks like a horrible whip-weal and flare, and could even escalate to worse, yeesh. On the other hand, I do use other organic oil scents, favoring resiny scents like myrrh a lot!

My favorite method would probably be to get your hands on some perfumer’s alcohol (not so easy these days…the post office has gotten pretty insane about opening - and basically ruining - packages with liquids in them, especially even slightly volatile ones…but it can be done) and making a spray mist, for either ironing or just lightly misting the fabric. Works a treat, lasts well, and usually isn’t too strong, although it’ll take a try or two to get it just right. 🙂

Yes. Exactly. Like maybe 5 drops or less. 2 if it’s going in the dryer.

As a young man, I know nothing of these things 🤷 But I am curious, is the purpose just to make it smell good?
