If you want to talk about the Civil war, Sherman’s March to the Sea and all that you will find people who write about it as if it were yesterday. Because they are interested in it for some reason.

No, I don’t think about it as if it were yesterday, and yes, my ancestors were Latin Catholics at the time, so some of them may have taken part. That interests me.

The fact is Orthodox don’t live and breathe the Crusades, but the topic comes up a lot around here, and this is pretty obvious: Orthodox are almost never the ones to bring up the topic. But yes, they should know about it if they are interested in their own history.

So we know about it sure…I learned most of what I know on the subject when I was a Latin Catholic. And anyone who has an interest in medieval history will know all of the spicey little details. You can read about it in any library.

What must bug a lot Latin Catholics is that they would like to identify with the era, and be proud of that. But there are also some pretty despicable things that happened to eastern Christians at the time and everyone knows it, you do and I do, all the authors do. I suppose that you would prefer that we not mention it.

I don’t open these topics up. I am pretty tired of all the whining over it from whatever direction. I don’t really care any more about it than any other period of history but when I smell a lie or see a spin coming, I am just not going to let that go unchallenged.

I would want to know what about the Crusades do people think were good? I am a Latin Catholic, and I would not bring the topic up. There were heros on both sides, but there were enough villans to make up for that.

Hesychios,what you said was the truth.Unfortunately like anything, it got way out of hand,ie,the sacking of Constantinople
and various other activities carried out by the crusaders. And you are right,there were other crusades.
My grandmother(my dad’s mom) had some cousins,the von Lilienschilds who fought in the crusades in the HolyLand.They also participated in the crusades in Eastern Europe,and can be traced back in the records of the city of Riga,Latvia to the 12th or 13th century.My dad said they were members of an order of knights, he didn’t think it was the Teutonic knights,but another group.In Riga during that time period was an order known as the Livonian Knights of the Sword,who later on became part of the Teutonic Knights.Grandma’s cousin,Rheinhold von Lilienschild was accused of being a jew by someone,and his family’s background was investigated by the Gestapo .There was no jewish blood in the family.He fled Germany to escape arrest and possible incarceration in a concentration camp or worse,since from what I understand,he was vocal about his dislike for the Nazis.Wound up living in Milwaukee with the rest of the family.
I’m sure my father’s family(grandpa’sside) fought in the crusades as well,but never asked him much about it.Since they have a long history in the german military,it would be fascinating to learn if any were teutonic knights and where they were at.maybe even some belonged to the knights Templars,since they were in Germany,but there is very little information about the orders activites in other countries besides France or England in english.

I don’t dwell on the Crusades,my interest in them is because I love history,and also I’m curious what part if any my ancestors played in them.
The same goes for my mother’s side who are Hungarians.I know they must have fought under Jan Hunyadi in trying to drive out the Tirkish invaders from Hungary and that part of the world.I don’t doubt they followed Attila the Hun and went arround fighting various tribes and roman soldiers.
To me it is stupid to apologize for what happend 600 or more years ago.Bad things happen no ones perfect,so get over it.

And yes,the Muslims did try to invade and take over western Europe.That’s why Jan Hunyadi and Prince Vlad Dracul also called Dracula,and Vlad the Impaler are national heros.
The last battle to stop the muslims was the Battle of Lepanto,which the Christians won.
Yes,the Polish also fought too,in the Battle of Vienna and others.
The rest of western europe at the time was reluctant to send aid to their eastern brothers i understand for various reasons.
That’s why in the Balkans you have people who are muslims,because their ancestors were told to convert or perish.

In about 50 years if Europeans don’t start having more children and letting in fewer Moslem immigrants.

An article from “The Guardian” mentioned that “The Pope did not identify guilty individuals or name the crusades, the Inquisition or the Holocaust, but the references were clear.” However, this is a March 2000 article; I think the pope might have later apologized more specifically.

This is hypothetical and an exaggeration as well.
But Catholics in Europe are not having as many children as Muslims. Perhaps Catholics do not love children as much as Muslims do? Why else does the typical Catholic family have fewer children?
