Their foundress was the first woman to found a men's congregation. She may have been a nun, as well. The histories I've read are contradictory on that point. At any rate, the Red Stars were founded to deal with the poor who flocked to the convent door, seeking aid.

(If she was a nun-founder, she shares that honor with Venerable Mother Marie Chappuis, VHM, who received the visions calling for the foundation of the Oblates of St Francis de Sales).
