Crusades - History Channel

As with any historical references, you need to look at the references themselves. A lot of the history that we are taught in schools and through the History Channel came from W.A.S.P. historians of the 1800s who did not particularly like the Catholic Church and did not have access to the primary sources that historians have access to today, since most were lost to antiquity. If you read books such as Dr. Jonathan Riley-Smith’s “A Concise History of the Crusades”, you get a brief summation of the origination of this sort of History. He also explains in his book that the scholarship is there, but no one seems to be utilizing it.

Actually, I agree with the point that you are making, but I don’t accept the implication that “conservatives” are any more truthful in presenting the facts. The Iraq war is proof of that.“The victors write the history.”

The native Americans took land from each other by force, so they aren’t totally innocent of the same type of behavior. I think it is human nature.

Well if you mean can we plunder happiness knowing that we’ve done something for God? . . . if so . . . then yes! 😛
Remember its not us who are conquering, it is God who grants the graces and Him who wins souls, all we can do is present the Gospel to others, correct their fallacies and pray for them. 👍

I saw the documentary and I find it to favor the Muslim position. I think for the most part the documentary was completely bias against Christians.

I do not deny the fact that Christians Crusaders did committed crimes against Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
 
The History Channel is not a good place to learn history. It is always biased no matter what perspective is achieved, and usually full of historical innacuracies, often insignificant but indicative of shoddy scholarship.

One has to remember that these are independent producers who put these things together and sell them to the History Channel. I have seen documentaries where the producers interviewed themselves as experts. You all could do the same, and interject your own particular biases, mistakes and lies.

That’s how Free Enterprise manifests itself in a free media. 😊

Let’s be frank here, whether reporting on cannibalism and massacres or not, it is hard to escape the charge of bias. If one leaves the details of such significant events out it is just as wrong as reporting them out of proportion. But what IS the proper proportion for reporting individual events in a big multi-century story like the crusades? The historical significance of each of these events is relative to the individual’s interest.

One has to remember that these are independent producers who put these things together and sell them to the History Channel. I have seen documentaries where the co-producers interviewed themselves as experts! We all could do the same, and interject our own particular biases, mistakes and lies.

That’s how Free Enterprise manifests itself through a free media. 😊
 
The History Channel and The Discovery Channel are wed to leftist materialism which infects their programming on anything and everything pertaining to Western culture.

If you haven’t set foot in a classroom in the past 20 years, you may not realize just how awful history education has gotten in America. Political correctness has killed history in this country.

Thankfully, however, the Information Age has made real history only a click away. It is now left to us to educate ourselves and to resist the indoctrination daily inflicted upon us by those who have no respect for the work of ages which is the West.

Catholics are used to this. Everyone else will simply have to get used to it.

The Native Americans also didn’t tend to “own” the land, any more than the Bedouins own the desert.

But this sort of “my country evil, my country’s enemies good” thinking is the idiotic rot which infects the producers of these indoctrimentaries.
 
I usually refer to it as the Heresy Channel. 😉

They occasionally air some good programs, but they have a lot of really dreadful programming. The questionable programs aren’t limited to religious history.
