The rumor I heard is that Mel Gibson’s production company is planning on making a movie about Boudicca, the battle-fighting maven of Britain. They’re calling it “Braveheart with a Bra.”
Lion of Narnia, I know that the armor and all that was wrong in The Thirteenth Warrior, but what I love is the scene where all the drunken vikings decide to join up with “Beowulf,” one by one. It’s the most beautiful example of the Germanic “comitatus.” I use it on my lecture on barbarians in my big western civ class, and it really works well. I also love the way they treat the languages: the Antonio Banderas character learns the viking tongue in the most beautiful gradual manner… words begin to appear to him (and to the audience), bit by bit. Nice.
