I’ve had a friend of over 16 years turn on me. And I’m at a loss. I will call her Patty (not her real name). She is 40 years old, and married. I’m a bit older than her.

It all started when Patty called me, needing a ride to her mechanic. I wasn’t able to help her, as she wanted. I was within 30 minutes of going out, with another friend… who was en route in her car, and could NOT have been contacted. Had the other friend arrived, and found me not at home… she wouldn’t have known what had happened to me.

I tried to explain all of this to Patty… and told her that I would come and pick her up, and drop her at her place of employment (which happens to be across the street from my home). Where I was sure, she could get further assistance. She told me… “Don’t worry about it. I’ll find another way”. I apologized to her, profoundly and we hung up (that was apology #1). But all through dinner with my other friend (whose birthday we were celebrating)… I worried about Patty.

The next day, I tried to contact Patty… several ways. By text (she never answered). By phone (she never picked up) and by social media (ignored my message… for a couple of days; apology #2 occurred here). Then… I began to notice “meme’s” on Patty’s social media page… things about bad, disloyal friends (she actually used another word, which I can not post here because it is filthy). I had a deep down feeling, that she was aiming those horrible things my way.

And so, with deep remorse… I contacted her AGAIN. I told her that I was aware she was still very angry, because of what was being posted on social media. And I apologized to her AGAIN (apology #3). She responded this time… rather sheepishly… and said she was sorry as well, for (quote) “the way I’ve been treating you”. That was an admission that YES, she was STILL angry and had not forgiven me. However, I accepted her apology, immediately… and thought that she had accepted mine, at last… and that was the end of it. Wrong.

In the next few days… she deactivated her social media account; saying nothing to me, about it. Again… I had that sinking feeling. So I messaged her older sister… who was aware of what had happened between Patty and I (apology #4, took place here). Patty’s sister responded very graciously, telling me that “Patty will come around”. I took that as further proof… that Patty WAS INDEED still angry with me. And I was correct. One morning, I walked outside to find that my car had been “keyed”. Paint had been badly scratched off… near the back bumper. Immediately, the thought occurred to me… that she works just across the street and often works night hours. I tried so hard… to NOT believe that Patty could do this to me. 😦 And I’m still trying to believe it was not her.

The next week… Patty reactivated her social media account, and immediately unfriended me. However, she left the rest of my family ACTIVE on her account. This went on for a number of weeks. And I took it (whether right or wrong) as a blatant attempt to further hurt and punish me… for not being available to help her.

Though my feelings were hurt badly, by now… I did not contact Patty on social media… out of respect for her feelings toward me. I had now apologized to her FOUR times. Yesterday… the final blow took place. After I had posted something on social media… about “forgiveness”… Patty (who had seen it) unleashed the full force of her rage on me.

My heart is crushed. This is a person who I had literally made a part of my family. I had asked her (and 2 other close friends) to sit in the front row with me at my mother’s funeral. That’s how highly I thought of her. I had cooked for her. She had sat at my table and eaten my food; and was made a part of family celebrations on many occasions. And to be “turned on” this way… for something over which I really had little to no control… is just beyond belief.

Some people may say… “You’re better off WITHOUT this friend”. But here’s the thing. I’m seeing a side of this friend that I have never seen in the over 16 years I’ve known her. I don’t know this “Patty” who has been treating me so badly. I don’t know her! 😦 I’m at a complete loss for what to think now.

Thank you for reading… and please, please keep me and Patty in your prayers. I must turn this over to God; because I’ve done all I feel I can humanly do… to fix this… to heal this… to get over this.

Thank you so much.😦

Wow, Patty seems hurt in ways that have nothing to do with you. You will both be in my prayers.

Interesting you should say that. One of my sisters made the observation that something else is going on in her life… and she is simply taking her frustrations out on me… in a BIG way.

Also clear evidence to me… that in her mind, perhaps… we were never truly friends. 😦 Because you don’t abuse friends, simply because your own life is off track. Thank you for your comments… and prayers.

Wow! It must hurt, but you’re clearly better off without that friend.

Praying for you and Patty.

I will pray but I have got to ask - Is Patty a drinker? This sounds like something I would do when I was drunk.

To the best of my knowledge, she is not a drinker. In all the years I’ve known her… I’ve only seen her take a drink one time. And that one time… was when I took her to dinner for her birthday and we agreed to do something “wild” and have a margarita. We both had the same reaction to the drinks  which were over filled with tequila.

The one thing I can say about her personality… is that, although I’ve always known her to be a generous and kind person… she can tend to be very negative at times. I’ve always tried to approach this aspect of her personality with a great deal of understanding; giving advice or life experience only when asked.

I am grateful to each person who has responded here, with assurances of your prayers. Thank you.

Something similar happened with a lifelong friend of mine, but I was aware that she was
going thru some mental problems and eventually she forgot that I had “offended” her.
Unfortunately it was due to her dementia but she reverted to her loving friendship with
me after several weeks. It was still sad for me, though that I couldn’t visit her until she
forgot. With your friend, it could signal a early sign of a mental condiditon. I hope not.

You are better off without someone in your life who would abuse you in this way.

For all involved, ICXC NIKA

It reminds me of the movie of a while ago: Fatal Attraction. Glen Close was terrible when this married man did not want to see her anymore.

She took revenge out on a little girl and her pet. I never liked Glen Close after that. (It wasn’t actually her, I realize, but I could not abide what she did.)

Some people think their friends owe them or something.

This frightens me. Although the “keying” of my car did take place during the course of all this… I’m truly hoping that it was not “Patty” who did it… and that it’s now over.

I’ve lost a friend (who I probably am better off… without… as has been said). But certainly hoping that she’s not gone off the deep end… with me as her target.

Please pray for me. And for her. Thank you. 😦

If in sixteen years, Patty’s never behaved this way before, I kinda wonder if something’s going on with her medically that’s causing her to act this way? Has she been to a doctor recently?

This doesn’t mean you have to put up with her attitude towards you, it’s just weird that in sixteen years, she’s never shown signs of such behavior before, then it suddenly comes from nowhere.

The only thing I can think here is, depending on Patty’s situation (was she in a dangerous area, was her cell phone about to die and you were the only person she could get hold of) was possibly leaving a note on your door for the other friend, and grabbing Patty and getting her to the mechanic, then get back to your house. But since you didn’t mention that, I’m going to say that wasn’t the case, in which case, Patty has a definite issue here.

No, she was not in a dangerous area. And I did offer to help her; by picking her up and driving her to her place of employment, where I was certain she could get the additional help she needed. This, she declined. Very curious to me. Patty and I once worked together, at this same place (how we met, 16 years ago). And I know the people there. Anyone there would have been glad to give her further assistance. They are lovely people. btw… her mechanic is located many miles from my house. And this all happened at afternoon rush hour.

She was apparently angry… because I wasn’t able to help her in the exact manner she wanted me to. It seems that she was deeply offended; but I could see no evidence that she even tried to understand the situation from my point of view.

Your other suggestions, about leaving my other friend a note… etc. did occur to me, in retrospect. But it all happened very quickly… and I simply didn’t think of any of that. In hindsight, I should have. But you know the old saying… “Hindsight is 20/20”.

Thanks for the prayers.

That’s awful Prayers to both of you.

I’ve had friendships come and go, and sometime it’s tough to understand the actions of others. We can only control our own actions and hope (and pray) for the best.

Just my opinion, but I think you put pleasure above need. I am pretty sure you could have left a note for your other friend even if you say you thought of it in retrospect. Also, she may have been very hurt that you put dinner out with another person more important than your 16 year friendship. I don’t know of very many people who does not have a cell ph. these days and not able to contact others in case of emergencies. There is always two sides to every story. Peace.

You have my respect and admiration for the loving way you tried to resolve this misunderstanding and I am very sorry for the loss of your friendship. Some years ago I lost a friendship that meant a great deal to me so I can empathize with what you are feeling. I will pray for you to be able to continue to come to terms with this situation, to be able to keep forgiveness in your heart and to be able to move forward if need be. God bless you.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

For Help in Trials

Most holy apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused you to be forgotten by many. But the Church honors and invokes you universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of. Pray for me who feels so hopeless. Make use, I implore you, of that particular privilege accorded to you of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of. Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, in particular MarieVeronica), and that I may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise you, O Blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you. Amen.
