Crusifixes?

I have noticed that looking at several different crusifixes that some of them have one nail through both His feet and some have two nails, one through each of His feet. I was under the impression that there was only one nail, is that true? or am i mislead. and either way if there was one or if there was two, why do they make them with both??

Also what does INRI mean? i see it at the top of the cross on a scroll and i’ve never known what it stands for.

As I understand, there were differnt ways the Romans administered crucifixtion. It may have been two nails through the feet…it may have been a nail on each side of the cross between the achillies tendon and ankle…the nails most likely were through his wrists…not his palms…crucifix’s are iconic representations…not historical statements I think.

“INRI”…“Iesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum” Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews…Latin, Greek had no “J” sound…neither did Hebrew.

As far as the nails there are different views, some say that the way portrayed with the hands spread out and one foot on the other is the way. Some say that his hands were spread out and his feet were on the sides of the cross with a nail in each ankle. Some say he had nails in both feet that were side by side. Some say the nails in his hands were actually in his wrists. I guess it depends on your belief and what the scripture says.
But in my opoion we really don’t know. The Romans used different ways to crucify people thats why there are different views on this. But whatever way it is I believe the point is he died for our sins not the matter if it was 3 nails or 4 nails that to me is a mute question if you look at the bigger picture of why he died.

Byzantine Crucifixes normally show 4 nails, including one in each foot.
