I have a proclivity to tear up during Good Friday liturgy. I try to suppress it, but sometimes tears will run down my face during the Passion when Jesus utters his last words.

My question is…I have always wondered if I’m the only one who does cry during the liturgy. Am I? Is it inappropriate?

You’re not. I tear up and I know several people at our service that have tears streaming down their faces. I doubt it would be viewed as inappropriate by any one.

I do, too. I found my voice quivering last night while singing Tantum Ergo, when they tranfer the Host to the altar of repose.

No. Sometimes I get misty-eyed. Yesterday during the washing of the feet, people were crying.

It’s normal to cry…do you see the tears of His Mother?

It is empathy, compassion.

I cry for the pain He suffered. It’s a horrible thought that God the Son ceased to exist upon Earth. And that humanity killed their Savior.

That’s why I wear my glasses and not my contact lenses to Good Friday services. I’m not kidding, I learned this lesson the hard way once, I teared up so badly that I lost one and had to drive home verrrry carefully!

I thought I was being a little nutty, but was reassured by quite a few people that they well up during Good Friday liturgy, and they do the same thing at Midnight Mass on Christmas, the Easter Vigil liturgy, and a few other times during the year. So I’m thinking that it is entirely normal to have some compassion, and yes, some gratitude for the events that are being unfolded in front of us. We’d have to be comatose to not recognize it for what it is, and respond to it on some heartfelt level. Many people tear up. Others experience this emotion differently, and it’s not our place to judge their compunction and gratitude by what they are expressing.

So allow the tears to come, take Kleenex, and leave the contacts out!

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I’ve never noticed anyone at our parish doing it, but I never really have been able to take a good, hard look at everyone. Thanks for the (name removed by moderator)ut!

I had the urge to cry today while at Church also whilst gazing at a statue of Our Lady whilst waiting for people to take their turn to kiss the Crucifix.

It was my first Good Friday service at Mass, I enjoyed it very much.

It is not appropriate at all and you are not alone. I cry as well. But, I have a granddaughter who sobs uncontrollably during the reading of the Passion. She starts welling up when the cruelty done to Jesus is read. When she was three, she screamed: “NOOOOO! DON’T!!” each time we read out: “Crucify him!” and pleadingly looked at those around her. By the time we got to the part where everyone knelt when Jesus died, you could hear many crying as well.

She is nearly seven now and understands better but, refuses to read aloud the part of the crowd.

I cannot allow myself to fully participate in the Good Friday liturgy. Tears would ruin the keys and the instrument. I really have to steel myself , and deliberately think of external things, to separate myself from the reading of the Passion, and the veneration of the Cross.

I wish I could just be in the assembly for one whole Holy Week, and be a completely involved person.

But the music ministry is what I do.

I was close to crying, mostly due to Liturgical abuse.

Blessed be God.

Oh, goodness, no!! The priest at our former parish (a very dramatic and emotional Sicilian) choked up every time he read the Passion and got to the part about Mary standing at the foot of the Cross. We all had to pause a few moments for him to compose himself. EVERY YEAR! LOL

No, you’re not the only one, and it’s absolutely appropriate. I personally wish I could cry during the liturgy, but alas, a long period of spiritual dryness has me feeling nothing most of the time. So be grateful for those tears. 🙂

I did not cry, but I was extremely moved by the long lines of people venerating the cross. I had a vision of a long line of Saints in heaven processing to the Throne.

thanks for sharing this “vision”, your words brought up tears again…I never thought of that aspect. I’m sure our beloved communion of saints are right there in line to kiss the feet of Jesus on the Throne…Wow what a beautiful thought!

Sadly i was really distracted during the reading of the Passion, but I felt like crying during the veneration of the Cross. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with crying thinking about Our Lord’s Passion 🙂 He suffered soo much for us!!

Have you ever read the spiritual diary of St. Ignatius of Loyola?

Reads something like this:

April 22. Tears at Mass.
April 23 More tears.
April 24 Many tears at Mass
April 25 Tears
April 26 Tears. Tears. More tears.

etc etc etc.

You’re in good company!!!

I love that, because I do cry all the time in church (almost every single mass). I try not to be obvious about it, and I’m not really too self-conscious, but it’s nice to know I have company!

I have been crying at every mass/liturgy/event since Palm Sunday. It’s all good.
