Crystal/Glass Chalice

How then could you justify being an EMHC given there is always a risk of dropping a chalice (no matter what it’s material is) that would also “profane” the Body and Blood of Christ?

I technically would be able to drop a chalice just receiving the Blood of Christ. I am not going to consider giving up receiving the Eucharist under both kinds, since this is encouraged by the Church. In my parents’ parish, I do receive under both kinds.

That’s right. So why would you receive the Precious Blood at the cost of possibly profaning it, and not distribute it at the same possible cost?

Your original comment made no sense. It would have been fine for you to say you wouldn’t distribute the Precious Blood in a non-approved vessel. It made little sense not to for the reason given since that threat of “profanation” is always present.

That “threat” is precisely the sort of thing some confused people would use as an argument against offering the chalice.

I’ve seen heavy crystal used, that looked like you couldn’t break it with a sledgehammer.

Think about it, if you drop the vesel containing the precious blood, whether it’s glass or metal, it’s going to spill on the floor.

I’ve yet to see in my 55 years of living, anyone spill a cup of liquid and have it not spill out.

That is what I am getting at, exactly.

If a glass chalice is dropped, there will be a more difficult mess to deal with, no question there, but the Precious Blood will not be “profaned” any differently than if the vessel was pure platinum.

If the priest is using crystal or glass vessels you can offer to purchase precious metal or you can go to the parish council and ask them to budget money for the proper vessels, or you can write a letter to the bishop. If this works, hurray!

Probably though it won’t. Then you can either try to ignore the fact that you are attending church in a parish that doesn’t really understand the significance of the Eucharist, because if they did, there would be enough pressure on the parish council and the priest that changes would be made OR (and this was my solution) find a parish that is not flagrantly ignoring the GIRM.
