CSI -- "The Pope said...."

On CSI last night a bit of a debate ensued between a regular cast member (sorry I don’t know any names, maybe some of you saw the program) and a guest star. The debate was about abortion. It was an awkward and pretty strange exchange to say the least. I got the impression the producers where trying to get thier pro-choice view out by making the regular cast memeber the wittier of the two and therefore the winner.

However it was one of those times, I feel, where truth shined through and, in my opinion, the scene backfired on CSI.

However during the exchange, the regular cast member made her argument based on some 16th century Pope who said that life began the first time the mother felt the baby move in her womb. Is this a true statement?

Also the male regular cast member further (the dude with the beard) strenthened her pro-choice argument by refering to some Leviticus verse about life begining when blood flows. She asked him, “Is that your view” (meaning his stand on abortion) and he replied that she could have used that verse, had she known it to state to the pro-life woman because it would have been difficult for her to refute.

Any thoughts on either the Pope, or the verse in Leviticus?

If the position against abortion depends on when *human *life begins, then we understand that point according to our best scientific knowledge. That knowledge has advanced considerably since the 16h Century.

With the current understanding of fertilization and DNA, we now know that the human conceptus is an individual, unique human person from the moment of conception.
