CSS Bible Study

Anybody have any feedback on the CSS bible study? The one I am referring to is the one written by a nun. Thanks.

Form what I can tell on the website it looks fine but it seems to come at Scripture study from more of an Apologetic point of view, which is OK if that is what you are looking for. It’s great for beginners in Scripture study.

Personally I would prefer something with a bit more meat that uses intense commentaries. In our parish we use the Collegeville Bible commentaries for our scripture study. We used to include the Little Rock Study, which incorporates the Collegeville guides, but we since dropped the Little Rock stuff and use the guides with our own personal research. It’s been going on for about 8 years now and everyone loves it.

I’ve been in several of their studies and found them good. I learned a lot from the actual study itself but unfortunately I went to this study through the Church. I say unfortunately because I almost dropped when the person in charge of the Churches adult education said that everyone will interpret things their own way and thats good. I spoke up and said that is NOT good to do with everything that the Church has many views that are the right way to look at it and there is also the wrong way to look at things - that is why for many years the Church didn’t promote private interpretation -because without the benefit of knowing the whole picture a person can be misled quite easily in some cases - and it is exactly how we have more than 33,000 different protestant denominations -all due to private interpretation without the benefit of sacred tradition to help put things into proper perspective. I was the only one who felt this way out of a class of 40 or so but thats the “new” Catholic Church for you (meaning how it is today compared to when I was raised learning my faith in the 70’s by people who were raised pre-vatican II) *no I am not a sedevacantist I do however prefer the way the Church was for approx.1930 years before all of the changes in V2.
Anyway, if you follow the actual CSS study and the answer sheet and use their site when a question is raised you will get the Churches view on the scripture (the Church does not have a official view on every line of scripture of course but so people will not be misguided it is stated from the Catholic view when that distinction is needed).
I learned quite a bit. The study does an awesome job of linking scripture in the NT to the old and how the old was fulfilled through the new etc. The DVDs are good although one of the priests kind of lulled me to sleep - we are just two different personality types I think. I prefer the high strung speakers that get your attention… like say Fr. Corapi was… and this one guy was more like say… um… a depressed Mr. Rogers for lack of a better way to explain it lol.
I ended up doing each study on my own instead of the group because I got tired of trying to correct the group and teacher when they went and started teaching from a free-for-all view on some things that had definite Catholic teachings that was contrary to it. I would certainly suggest the study but be sure to get a copy of the “suggested answers” from the leader - or on the website - that will keep you on the right track and in line with Catholic teaching. Hope this helped! Btw - Scott Hahn is directly involved with many of these and he is pretty good when it comes to knowledge from what I read of his so far anyway.
