You hit the nail right on the head. Though it is easy to get out, just they won’t take your name off the rolls (to inflate their membership numbers).

Cool fact: The Mormon Church doesn’t actually have 14.7 million members. It only has 4-5 million active members… that’s even smaller then the Jehovah’s Witnesses and Oneness Pentecostals!
To be fair, I think if you compared the number of actual active Catholics to the official count of around 1.3 billion, you would be shocked. It’s really pretty sad.

Could you provide those numbers? or give a rough estimate

The difference is, you rarely hear Catholics talk about how we are. I usually see it in news stories about Catholics. Like when a new Pope is elected, you read, “The world’s 1 billion Catholic got a new leader today…”

With Mormons, it is usually LDS leaders bragging about how many Mormons there are…

I agree with this; I’ve never heard a Catholic discuss how large the Church is myself; I always see it on the news for various reasons not always positive of course.

The LDS church uses it as a “faith promoter”. General Conference is meant to just spark the flame in it’s members and to help with that they tell us how much the church has grown.

but if it is misleading and dishonest, what does that say?

Catholics do not need member numbers to spark flames…
