What is the rubric for cleaning out the cups used to hold the Communion wine? Does the priest have to do it or can the lay ministers take the cups directly from dispensing the sine into the sacrasity for cleaning?

Only the priest, deacon or instituted acolyte are to purify the vessels. It may be done immediately after Communion at the altar or credence table or the chalices may be left, covered, on the credence table to be purified immediately after Mass. Only AFTER they’ve been purified are they to be taken to the sacristy to be washed.

Thought so. Therefore the LEMs should not get first crack at purifying the cups after Cimmunion. Thanks for the infor and fast reply.

The Chalices are emptied right after Holy Communion by consuming the remaining Blood of Christ. this is done either by the Priest or Deacon at the altar, or by the Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion who is only permitted to consume what remains of the Blood of Christ in their chalice.What is the rubric for cleaning out the cups used to hold the Communion wine? The First Purification must be done by the priest or deacon or IA, either at the altar or the credence table after Communion or immediately after Mass.
The Second cleaning can be done by a Lay person.

In my diocese we are told to ignore this and to continue to clean them.
Since the Priest just leaves the parish the MC’s, have to do this or else they will just sit there. Everyone just goes off to lunch or home afterward. There is just 2 Masses in my parish and our Bishop doesn’t seem to care about this abuse.
So unfortunately even though we know it is wrong, what can we do? We cannot let our Lord be disrespected by not cleaning the vessels. Our Pastoral Coordinator just kicks out Priests who are too orthodox, so we are stuck.
All we can do is be faithful and hopefully a man will come out of this Parish to serve as a Priest. But who would want to in this environment?
