Curious about NFP

I am recently engaged, and planning on marrying my college sweetheart. He and I are both against the idea of Birth Control, and would love to learn more about NFP. However, money is tight as we are both recent college graduates and we’re basically just trying to make ends meet right now and NFP books and materials in the stores are expensive. Are there any valuable, trustable online materials that can be downloaded instead? We both would appreciate some direction! Thanks!

I am in the same boat…lol…but I all ready have 3 children from a previous marriage and yes it has been hard, with my new fiance wanting to enlarge the family, it makes things very complicated…so I wanted to visit an NFP clinic but the costs are just uhm, a little out of my budget so I am definitely looking for the best and cheapest information out there!! So if anyone does know and you get a message about it please let me know!!!

When we took the local class we were able to make payments instead of paying up front. I also think that some parishes pay for the NFP class of all engaged couples. Speak with your parish or to the engagement encounter in your area and see if you would qualify for assistance.

When I took Billings classes last year, I think it cost me a grand total of about $30. That was for an initial teaching session, as many follow-up sessions as I needed, charts, stickers, and a handbook. Compared to some of the other costs of wedding planning it’s quite a bargain!

Try contacting your diocese to see if they offer classes and to see if they can help with the cost (our diocese classes were just $35).

Also, look into nfpandmore.com/nfphowto.shtml which has a free online how-to book…
And also consider checking out the book Taking Charge of your Fertility from the library… IGNORE the parts where it mentions using condoms during the fertile phase (it’s not faith based - but it’s a great book!)…

As a fellow NFP user (a husband) it is always encouraging to see posts like this with those looking into NFP and wanting that to be an important part of their marriage. I will tell you that it is one of the top 5 best decisions you can make for your marriage.

I would suggest checking with your Diocesan office. I’m sure they have people that could talk to you and provide you with enough pamphlets and other information to get you started. It might not be complete information but hopefully it could help.

It’s the website for the Taking Charge of Your Fertility that Em mentioned. The forums have proven invaluable to me in learning to interpret fertility signs. Also, there is a huge collection of women’s charts which will prove very useful for you as you learn more about your own patterns.

NFP is birth control. It’s just not contraception.

There is nothing morally wrong with birth control. Contraception is where there is a problem. It might seem like I am nitpicking, but the Church herself says that responsibly controlling the use of our fertility is not only appropriate, but expected of us.

I second going to the library to check out Taking Charge of Your Fertility. If for whatever reason you can’t get it at the library, I would go to Barnes & Noble, plop down in one of those comfy chairs & read it.
