It annoys me as well. But I have the answer as to why he’s called a monkey. When the book was first written all monkeys, prosimians (think lemurs), and apes were all called monkeys. It wasn’t for a few more years that the scientific community decided to break it down more.

I have a feeling that the publishing company wanted to keep the integrity of the original writing, which meant keeping the word “monkey” in all of the future books.

Oh yeah, they are old. In the original Curious George, the Man with the Yellow Hat captures George, and on the way back to the Steam Ship, there is a sailor rowing and the MwtYH has a shot gun on his back, and when they get to the big city George smokes a pipe. The fire engines are completely old school, and there is a man selling balloons right outside the prison wall. (copyright: 1941).
