Readings that leave me smiling:

Genesis 25:30

*He said to Jacob, “Let me gulp down some of that red stuff; I’m starving.” *

Genesis 22:5

*Then he said to his servants: "Both of you stay here with the donkey, while the boy and I go on over yonder. *

I am curirous. Are these from the Lectionary or another translation of the Bible?

Well, that’s what he asked for: red stuff, red stew, red pottage. He was called “Edom” (which is essentially the same word used in Hebrew for “red [pottage]”) because of what he sold his birthright for. And because his hair was red.

This is a matter of translation, not interpretation. I suppose you could say “Let me eat some of that minestrone, for I am famished” because minestrone is red stew. You could say “Manhattan clam chowder” or “tomato bisque”. But that’s not what was written nor what was said. Esau was hungry and he didn’t care what he was eating, he simply saw Jacob preparing some red-colored food and wanted it.

It’s like the Sunny-D commercial. “What’s your mom got in the fridge?” “I dunno… some OJ, some purple stuff… oh, and Sunny-D!”
