Hello,

For those I haven’t met through Catholic Answers Forums; My name is Maria and I am homeschooling a fifth grader, for the first time. I am looking for a good typing software. Her school uses UltraKey 5.0. It’s kind of expensive. Does anyone know anything about this application or does anyone know of any other really good typing program, that is cheaper??? Maybe I should spend the money for the rest of the family to learn to type.🤷

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing. This is the program I used 15 years ago for my homeschooled children and it is still out there - for both Mac and PC.

Welcome to the CAF too.

Thank you. Will look into it.🙂

Chronister4673 beat me to it. BBC Schools has LOADS of online services that will play into your curriculum nicely.

I used this program at the last school where a big part of my job was to implement classroom-teacher driven computer use in a PreK-8. Nobody liked TypingTutor (which is very good BTW) after they saw Dancemat Typing. The big kids loved it as much as the little ones.

Another good program is Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing if you are looking for an install.

It may be hard to teach the most technical aspects of typing techniques without showing which finger goes where, but what about dictating letters or giving the child something meaningful to type? I learnt my typing (typically 60 wpm in English) by coding and by writing my essays and other works since my handwriting was horrible for medical reasons. The process would have been more efficient with proper guidance, but hey, you can apply proper guidance yourself while using a nice literary text or dictating a real letter. The latter is good for spelling, as well.

I was able to check out the ***Dancing Mat Typing ***on the BBC Schools website, bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/, last night. My husband who is a NC Prgrmmr, was able to sit down and learn his home row on the keyboard. He said he could learn to type from this. Thank you for this suggestion. I like how it break everything down into Four Levels, then again into three stages per level. There are a total of 12 stages. I think this will work great for beginning typing.

I still have my old typing books from when I learned how to type. I can use these for drills and/or tests. I can type between 32 and 50 wpm. Just depends on how much I’m using it at any one given time.

 I would be very interested if anyone knows of any more online, typing programs.

Again thank you for your help.

GOD BLESS.
Maria 🙂
