What is the moral fault involved in using curse words, specifically, if the “F” word is used in a context such as “I will never f***ing work with that person again”, in other words, in a context where the word is used as an emphatic.

Mortal sin, venial sin, no sin?

No sin at all. If you realize, the words mean nothing. In German we have Crucifix and in Spanish Cuerpo de Dios which mean Crucifix and Body of Christ. How these words may be considered curse words i cannot understand.

In all ppeoples there are curse words meant to take off steam. In English words like f**** off do not mean anything and anothers with the word f**** ask you to do impossible sexual acts. they do not mean sex, they mean anger.

The curse words go for sex and religion for these are sensitive themes. In some languages, the surse words are so stupid so stupid that pretend that they mean anything is stupid too.

Now, better let steam off without saying curse words. But, some people cannot do without them. I had a colleague whose sentences were 75% curse words. I would say: “why instead of saying with this fork and knofe I eat this beef, you way with tis XXXX and this XXXX I eat this XXXX”. the XXXX were not sexual words but dirty one, nauseating ones that you would not use for lunch !!!

I am not a subject matter expert, but here is my two cents.

First of all, I admit that I am not proud of it, but I occasionally fail and curse myself.

Ultimately the desire behind any word is what makes it evil. The F word is cause of concern due to it’s reputation and is offensive to many regardless of your use of the word and can be cause for scandal. In my case, cursing is generally an expresion of extreme anger and not sound judgement. If anything it shows a poor use of vocabulary. There are better words that can articulate what you mean.

Hope this helps.

I could be wrong but I would think that swearing is evil based on the fact that we don’t want children to swear even if they don’t know what it means and I have never known swearing to be positive. I would think that swearing would be a venial sin.

Real swearing is making casual or inappropriate use of the Lord’s name. Most of the strong cuss words we used now were perfectly ordinary everyday words to anglo-saxons. it was the romance based norman french that found the saxon crude, and over time they became the shock words we have now.

Sin attached to them is contextual. I doubt soldiers or construction workers think twice about hearing such words in conversation. However, if you were at a meeting of the union of catholic mothers, then it would be insulting & wholly unnecessary. deliberate usage of such words just to cause offence would be sinful, I guess, because it shows disrespect to other people.

Of course it may be that some squaddies are a bit precious, but I dont believe that any of them, at being shot at or bombed, are likely to say ‘gosh, how jolly awful, chaps!’

Words are words. They have no intrinsic meaning and only mean what we want them to. Saying the “F” word to someone with the intent to hurt them is a sin because you are trying to hurt someone, not because of your language. Using a word casually around people who also use it there is no sin (in my opinion)

However, there are social norms that must be respected. Some people have ascribed powerful and offensive meaning to the words and do not wish to hear them. If you are spouting them in public with no regard of the people around you, you are sinning in that you are causing scandal and being rude.

Basically it’s all about intent - if you’re around people who have no problem with it and use them for comedic purposes, then I don’t think that’s a sin. If you’re using them to be cruel, abrasive, vulgar, or rude then you are guilty of sin.

Maybe not a sin but I’ll keep working at cleaning up my potty mouth. I have an awful fear that He will return like a thief in the night while I’m fighting the string on the lawn trimmer. How embarrasssing when after I’ve put that thing in its place to look up with the Master Gardener Standing next to me.

👍

I curse sometimes, it’s my worst habit. I hate myself for doing it. I don’t think it’s mortally sinful, though it CAN be.

What WhitacreGirl said is excatly right.
