The TLM did not, in my knowledge, actually curse the Jews and other heretics. But interestingly, St. Paul did:My wife is adament, while listening to NPR, some Catholic academic being interviewed admitted to the Tridentine Mass actually cursed Jews, Protestants, and other non Catholics: Personaly, I think my wife miss-heard or miss remembered–orthe “academic” egregiously miss-stated prayers for the conversions of these peoples as “curses”
Your prompt answers appreciated
1Cor. 16:22 If any man love not our Lord Jesus Christ, let him be anathema, maranatha.
Gal. 1:8-9 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema. As we said before, so now I say again: If any one preach to you a gospel, besides that which you have received, let him be anathema.
The literal meaning of the word “anathema” is “accursed.” Here is the relevant definition from Webster’s:
“a ban or curse solemnly pronounced by ecclesiastical authority and accompanied by excommunication”
Since Pope Benedict dedicated this year to St. Paul, I’m wondering when the bishops will return to the traditional wording used to describe those who reject Christ and/or the fullness of his gospel message (aka non-Catholics).
And in reference to those who say that Jews or others who deny Christ are somehow excused if they cannot do so “in good conscience,” I would answer that all are obligated to join the Church and such is necessary for salvation unless the person is in a state of invincible ignorance concerning Christ and his Church. Anyone who follows a deformed conscience still retains the obligation to diligently and properly form his conscience based on truth, to which God directs all hearts by his grace. We also know beyond doubt that if those outside the Church would humbly beg for light from heaven, then they would (if it is possible) become Catholic and enter the visible Church; however, often times pride, which is a cardinal sin, gets in the way and such persons infected with pride and unwilling to be open to the gospel message are left outside the Church.
Pope Pius XI, Moralium Animos:
“We desire that Our children should also know, not only those who belong to the Catholic community, but also those who are separated from Us: if these latter humbly beg light from heaven, there is no doubt but that they will recognize the one true Church of Jesus Christ and will, at last, enter it, being united with us in perfect charity.”
