Cursillo a movement, an organization, or a cult?

Hardly anyone brought a Bible, and of the Bibles I saw, most were of the King James variety. I felt that much of the weekend dealt with “spirituality” divorced (to some extent) from Catholicism. That was my experience; your mileage may vary.

In my opinion - and that’s all it is, just my opinion - if you are strong in your faith there is no need to attend. If you are weak in your faith, your time might be better spent in prayer, adoration, Mass, and reading a solid Catholic inspirational book.

As noted, your experience may be entirely different, and I certainly respect that.

Although I didn’t find my Cursillo weekend as transformative as some folks have, I just wanted to say that on my weekend, they gave each of us Bibles (NABs) and we had Mass, confession, and adoration. (I hadn’t been to confession in AGES before that!) I have not worked any weekends so I’ve never been to another but the one I made, so I don’t know if this is standard.

Thanks Juanh and the others that have given their own perspective to a Cursillo they attended. I never heard of it but from your testimonies I am really keen to attend one… if they ever held one out at this little corner of the world I would be keen to attend.

I just attended at my church a Parish Alive retreat and I was a little upset at the end of the retreat they were pushing the members to make their Cursillo and that the Parish Alive was a pre-cursor to Cursillo. I used to belong to a Catholic Charismatic Group back in the 80s and I don’t wish to go backwards in my spiritual journey by attending Cursillo which in our diocese, Cursillo is open to all faiths and is like the old Charismatic Groups.

So for all those folks who say Cursillo is only Catholic - here is a quote from the erie Diocese:

“What are the requirements to join the Cursillo Movement?
Any adult man or woman **of any faith **can make a Cursillo in the Erie Diocese. For married couples it is required that the spouse make his Cursillo prior to the wife making hers however single women are welcome at any time. Additional information can be found on this web site, from any current Cursillista, by talking to your Priest or by emailing office@eriecursillo.org.”

I know this is a bit of an old thread but thought I would share my thoughts having attended a weekend recently. The Cursillo retreat I went to was all about having Jesus as your “Ideal” and becoming a stronger Catholic in your community and a leader in the faith. I really like what one of the team said that we each should work on improving our selves, our family, and helping those in our immediate environment become closer to God. This is really what being a christian is about and my pastor said it right saying we should spread the fire of God spirit and love in our communities. We as the lay people are meant to do this and each in our own way that is done with kindness and love, it should not be forced, and it should be natural just being a good friend and living with Christs love in your heart. Part of this is prayer, part of this is study, and part of this is your own actions of love in your communities.

For me more then the talks it was the “witness” of the men around me who each day give their lives to God. The retreat helps you on your walk with God to become more holy and challenges you to continue a life of prayer, action, and study, challenges you to be a leader and to help your brothers and sisters on their journeys, to keep them mindful of Gods call for each and every one of us to live in his love and to be his hands and feet. We are all called to this whether we choose to accept it or not.

I myself have had deep cuts in my life that have and still do impact my trust in the church, all I can say is that this movement can be a beautiful experience even if you have been through a lot and that its intended to help you on your journey with God.

I have been praying a lot more then I have in recent years and Im working hard to be the best husband and father I can be and to be a more positive role model for all those around me. I have to work hard to stay encouraged because of various challenges I have faced throughout my entire life and I expect that to continue for me. For me knowing I have brothers and sisters in Christ that I can call upon to be mentors and spiritual advisors is very important.

We all need the support of good Christians to help us when we stumble and its easier when you know someone is there to help you back on your feet. God Blass and De Colores!

Aside from debating if it is a cult or not, let us establish one thing. Just as with the Charismatic Movement, there will be websites and individuals who will insist it is purely Catholic. Then there is the real information, that will tell you exactly how it started and by whom. This is yet another interfaith effort that is slowly morphing into a so called “Catholic” movement. Not every site is scrupulous with what they post either. I have seen some foreign language Catholic Cursillo websites with links to the Toronto Blessing. So go figure! (The Toronto Blessing is a non-catholic diabolical charismatic sect)

So take your pick who do you believe how it started and by whom.

I do realize that this is an older thread that was recently bumped up by another poster, but I must say this:
The ‘Charismatic Movement’ is fully supported by the Catholic Church. Not just a faction, but from the Vatican down.

The implication that the Charismatic is not Catholic, nor approved, is untrue.

I do not have information on Cursillo and cannot comment on it. However, the implication that Charismatic is not truly Catholic is untrue.
