Cursillo-type retreats

My mother-in-law (evangelical protestant) has invited me to be a retreat participant for The Great Banquet, a retreat similar to Cursillo. I haven’t been to Cursillo, but I’d like to go someday. Does anyone know if The Great Banquet leans heavily to the protestant side of things? Is Cursillo heavily Catholic-oriented?

She says The Great Banquet is nondenominational, but I really don’t want to get involved if it’s not. I think I could manage, but I’d really rather not confuse myself.

I know that most of you will say, “just go to Cursillo,” but I don’t know if I’ll have that option or not. I don’t have to decide soon; the next retreat isn’t until September.

Also, when attending Cursillo or similar retreat, is it necessary for both spouses to attend? My spouse is not Catholic and has no interest.

I wouldn’t go to a non-Catholic retreat. If it is “supposed to be like Cursillo,” just wait for Cursillo.

Retreats are often high-intensity situations, and they can be confusing if the pattern of belief is not precisely one’s own.

FWIW, people go to Catholic retreats without their spouse all the time.

I believe I was the only single woman at the cursillo I went to. There is nothing about cursillo that is for single people. The one I went to was all about the married couples… and how the husbands went to cursillo first and then the wives and how wonderful that was and how it was going to affect them with their marriage and the cursillo and the meetings and such afterwards.

I felt very much out of place there being a widow/single. And there were other problems as well, it was so bad I came home Sat. evening. However, that’s not to say that there are no good cursillos out there, mine just wasn’t one of them.

And yes, it is VERY VERY Catholic.
