A while back, my elder sibling told me that vulgarity is not considered a sin but taking God’s name in vain is as is swearing/breaking oaths. I can’t find any definitive teaching on this.
Whenever I confess taking God’s name in vain or cussing (4 letter words for example), the priest never asks if I have received Communion and I was wondering if that’s because it isn’t a mortal sin?
I know it’s bad and my habit has been curbed a huge amount but every once in a while, something slips out and I usually make an Act of Contrition. I do receive Communion though, weekly, as I didn’t know if it was a mortal sin and haven’t ever wondered. I’ve seen different opinions on that and I’d like an answer. I probably should go to a priest for this…
