My conservative Southern Baptist Greek professor told us that word was something that was so profane it wasn’t spoken in polite society. At Gordon College, which didn’t even allow dancing at the time, we translated it with the only English word he said carried the full meaning of the Greek: S__t. I got my only “A” in Greek on my translation of that passage.

Incidentally, S*** being considered vulgar is really all about intellectual snobbery. After the Norman invasion of England in 1066, the word from which we get our word, “S***”, became considered “vulgar” or “common” because it was monosyllabic.

Spoilsport. When I finished my final exam in English linguistics (WHAT a bore!), I came home and did the trace of that ver word back to old Norse or Old High German – I forget which – “skitan” before pitching my textbook in the dustbin. Seemed like the right thing to do.

I would just like to bring something to everybody’s attention. IF cussing isn’t wrong, why is it not allowed on this forum and why, for even the ones who DO say it is okay, not post what they want, since there is nothing wrong with it?

Because for one, some people find it offensive, such as yourself, and two, read the criteria above, to just post whatever curse word you want out of whatever whim is sinful because it would be wasting words, wasting words is only what would make crusing sinful…
