What is looked for in the determination of “best interests of the child?” Does a father even have a chance? How can he explain things in view of the surprising and disheartening anti-father orientation of family courts? Never thought to be in this situation.

This is a question best asked to an attorney. Laws and courts vary from state to state.

He needs sound legal advice, not opinions from the peanut gallery.

I agree. He or she will know what goes on in your particular state, and what is required in the determination. A good attorney will also know when a soon-to-be-ex is bluffing the other one into thinking he or she is going after custody to lower child support payments and settlement of property. I know that good attorneys are expensive, but if you need one, they are worth their weight in gold.
