Paging Father Serpa. Paging Father Vincent Serpa, O.P. to a Black and White wall phone…

After a long time of study and formation, the man I sponsored in RCIA will soon be ordained a priest of the Ordo Praedicatorum (Dominican Order). He has promised to invite my family to his ordination ceremony, and we’re excited to be going.

Since Dominicans take a vow of poverty and live in community, I’m not sure what kind of ordination gift is appropriate. If we give him cash, it would go directly to the order. Same with a Mass kit, a chalice or vestments. And trying to train a new puppy to carry a torch in his mouth is proving problematic. Thus my questions:

What is the customary gift for a newly ordained priest of a mendicant religious order?

Any and all suggestions gift ideas will be appreciated. I will also appreciate any appropriate bible verses (in English or Latin) you can suggest for his ordination card.

Also - Please keep Brother (now Deacon) Kevin O.P. in your prayers.

Thanks in advance!

What do the Jesuits and Dominicans have in common?

Well, they were both founded by Spaniards, St. Dominic Guzman for the Dominicans, and St. Ignatius Loyola for the Jesuits. They were also both founded to combat heresy: the Dominicans to fight the Albigensians, and the Jesuits to fight the Protestants.

What is different about the Jesuits and Dominicans?

Well, have you met any Albigensians lately?

Yes, giving gifts to religious is problematic. One suggestion I have is talking to the religious in question. Or you can talk with their confreres or superior… I did write an article on this topic which you might find helpful in your quest for the perfect gift.

Gifts for religious

Hope this helps!

Thank you both for your help!

Good suggestion. I think we’re leaning that way. Sort of like the old chestnut:
Two Dominican friars, a novice and an old-timer, are out begging for food. As they walk along, they meet the local miser. The older friar calls out a greeting. “God be with you! In the name of our Master and yours, will you give us a coin or two that we may buy food for our convent?”

“Harrumph!” the miser answers. “And supposing I don’t?”

“Then we shall all grow another day thinner,” replies the senior Dominican with a gentle smile.

“Look, if I did give you money,” the miser says with a shudder, “how do I know you won’t just spend it on more of your fancy books?”

At this, the Dominican novice pipes in, "Oh, don’t worry - we’ve got book money!"God Bless!

When my friend was ordained a dominican priest, we bought him a stole which dominican sisters made. On the inner side of the stole we had a citation from the Bible embroidered. It was from a psalm, but I can’t remember which one. 😊

But that was quite expensive since it was hand made and unique.

I think he could also use a white shirt with a collar, maybe a picture of a dominican saint he can put in his room, …
