Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham questions

I attend a parish of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, and because of inconsistencies between their liturgy and the Novus Ordo, I’d like to switch the version of the Divine Office I pray to the Customary of Our Lady of Walsingham. I have a few questions for anyone that has knowledge of this book:
  1. Is this recognized as the Liturgy of the Hours (e.g. Could an Ordinariate priest fulfill his obligations with this)?
  2. How does praying the Psalter in Course (pg. 842) supposed to work? What is the weekday psalmody (pg. 844) for?
  3. How do the post-biblical readings fit in to the office?
  4. Is there an Office of Readings? The book refers to it throughout but there’s no order for it.
  5. It refers throughout about taking parts from the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Rite, or even using whole offices from it. Is it supposed to be interchangeable or something?

I’m aware of the customary and can tell you the answer the question one is yes. But I’m afraid I don’t know the contents of the book. I’m a member of the Ordinariate, but I use the Book of Common Prayer for my Daily Office, which my priest says is perfect for a layman in the Ordinariate. From a quick internet search, apparently you need the office of readings from the Roman Rite Liturgy of the Hours in addition to the Customary.

Ok. I’m glad question one is yes. So how would I combine office of readings with Lauds?
 
I use the Customary each day. It takes a bit of time to get used to it but it is worth persevering with. I’ll try to answer as best as I can; it may be worth asking your pastor to go through it with you or attend a public celebration of the Offices as it’s better to have a ‘hands on’ experience.

    Yes, with Prayer During the Day and the Office of Compline.
  2. How does praying the Psalter in Course (pg. 842) supposed to work? What is the weekday psalmody (pg. 844) for?
    Psalter in course means reading through the entire psalter each month, Day 1 is the 1st of the month; Weekday Psalmody offers the Psalms used in the LOTH (for example, I usually use the LOTH for morning prayer so for continuity I use the weekday psalter).
  3. How do the post-biblical readings fit in to the office?
    Post- Biblical readings may replace one of the readings in the Office - this is explained in the introduction to the Customary.
  4. Is there an Office of Readings? The book refers to it throughout but there’s no order for it.
    No, the Morning Office absorbs elements of the Office of Readings (e.g. The Te Deum, when appointed and the use of a Post-Biblical).
  5. It refers throughout about taking parts from the Liturgy of the Hours of the Roman Rite, or even using whole offices from it. Is it supposed to be interchangeable or something?
    Psalms and readings from the LOTH may be used to replace the Psalms and readings appointed in the Customary- the important thing is to keep continuity.

Sorry to be jumping into the conversation with silly questions, but…

Can you tell me what this book is? I’m a Catholic and have a great affinity to Our Lady of Walsingham. I pray the Office, would this be a substitute? And addition? Am I allowed as a Roman Catholic? Our Lady was originally Catholic.

If you could, please explain what this is and how to use it.

I should also probably point out that the Customary is interim (I believe the word “tolerated” was used by the Ordinariate OLW) until the final Divine Office can be compiled and approved. I’m not Ordinariate, but I’m also not interested in shelling out cash especially since I have no obligation to the Office. However, when they issue Divine Worship: The Daily Office (or whatever official title they will call it), I’m likely getting a copy.

Well, there doesn’t seem to be any sign of that coming soon, and I can’t stand the Novus Ordo Office much longer when a better English version is available.

Oh just saying. By all means go ahead and get it; it’s a nice publication.

I do find it troubling, however, that one has to “stand” the Liturgy of the Hours, as if it’s a bad thing that somehow has to be endured rather than a gift to be embraced.

No, I’ve found it nice, but it is badly composed. Psalms omitted or chopped up, scripture chopped up, bad doxology translation.
 
There is this site available which calls itself “The Daily Office of the Catholic Church according to the Anglican Use”. I’m not sure if its the same or not but worth checking out. bookofhours.org/ . I’ll also post the link to what I use from the BCP which you can subscribe to as an RSS Feed and which updates with the daily readings.

I think that site is the Book of Divine Worship. I already have the book, I don’t need the office, just have some questions on them. They’ve all been answered by the way.
 
Something I forgot to mention yesterday - if you are using the Customary for Prayer During the Day you should consult the footnotes on pages 57 and 72 as there are some slight changes when the Psalter in course is used.
