I am a crafty person and want to use bible scripture in a craft and decoupage them onto a dresser. I don’t know if this is a big no no?? I have been trying to research it and found some answers from protestant Christians but I want the catholic answer please! Can someone help???

What if you copy and paste sections from a scripture website instead of clipping up a Bible? Just a thought. ☺️

I thought that as well but the type of paper wouldn’t be the same…

When I saw the title, I thought this was about cutting pages out of the Bible because of not liking what was on them. I was like 😮 , but I’m glad to see I was wrong.

Since this is driven by art and the use of a particular kind of paper for that art, I personally don’t see anything wrong with it.

Thank you! I just didn’t want it viewed as defacing the Bible!

No ,you shouldn’t do it ,its like a sacrilege and blasphemy and like breaking of the second commandment ,because the bible is the Word of God As in John 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being Revelation 19:13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called The Word of God.

this craft is like throw your pearls before swine as in Matthew 7:6 “Do not give what is holy to dogs; and do not throw your pearls before swine, or they will trample them under foot and turn and maul you.

2142 The second commandment prescribes respect for the Lord’s name . Like the first commandment, it belongs to the virtue of religion and more particularly it governs our use of speech in sacred matters. 2144 Respect for his name is an expression of the respect owed to the mystery of God himself and to the whole sacred reality it evokes. The sense of the sacred is part of the virtue of religion:

[2145] The faithful should bear witness to the Lord’s name by confessing the faith without giving way to fear.76 Preaching and catechizing should be permeated with adoration and respect for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

2146 The second commandment forbids the abuse of God’s name , i.e., every improper use of the names of God, Jesus Christ, but also of the Virgin Mary and all the saints.

[2148] Blasphemy is directly opposed to the second commandment. It consists in uttering against God - inwardly or outwardly - words of hatred, reproach, or defiance; in speaking ill of God; in failing in respect toward him in one’s speech; in misusing God’s name. St. James condemns those "who blaspheme that honorable name [of Jesus] by which you are called."78 The prohibition of blasphemy extends to language against Christ’s Church, the saints, and sacred things. It is also blasphemous to make use of God’s name to cover up criminal practices, to reduce peoples to servitude, to torture persons or put them to death. The misuse of God’s name to commit a crime can provoke others to repudiate religion.

Blasphemy is contrary to the respect due God and his holy name. It is in itself a grave sin.79.

([103] For this reason, the Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord’s Body. She never ceases to present to the faithful the bread of life, taken from the one table of God’s Word and Christ’s Body.66)

I find it interesting that some Protestants who accuse Catholics of worshiping idols are the same who will burn a Bible if it touches the ground.

The Muslims also have strict rules about how a paper copy of the Koran is treated.

A Bible is a book, it is made of paper and is not in and of itself sacred (the words are sacred). If your Bible has been blessed, I would treat it as other sacramental like the blessed palms from Palm Sunday or rosary beads.

As long as you are not decoupaging in a way that is meant to disrespect the words (for instance, using in a montage of graphic violent images or something), there is not a inherent evil in using Scripture words for art.

Many, many people buy stickers to decorate a wall that are Scripture passages, T-shirts, bumper stickers, murals, we often put passages of the Bible as a decoration.

I do NOT intend to use the pages for Blasphemy! My dresser holds a hand carved statue of Jesus with the lambs made out of olive branches from Jerusalem and a Mural of him walking through a field. I want to redecorate my home with more visuals and reminders of God’s presence along with my many crucifix’s. The way I want to display his word is only to respect it even more by having it displayed somewhere else in my home.

I do not want in any way to offend God or the Church.

I would maybe ignore that post. It’s pretty clear that you’re not going for blasphemy.

The fact of the matter is, the physical Bibles themselves are made of matter, and matter eventually breaks down. Hence why we have no original copies of the Bible that were handwritten by the apostles.

Working at a parish, I have to recycle Bibles sometimes. After years of use, it’s time for them to be replaced. What you are proposing doesn’t seem worse than that. Indeed, it seems like a far better fate than that.

That’s nice to know ,you don’t intend to dis-respect, you were not clear in you first post ,so i guess, as little Lady suggested a sticker or you can get some cards or art on placards in Catholic religious shops, instead of cutting the Scriptures from a Bible if you intend to.

As Catholics we are taught, how to dispose old blessed sacramental s or items ,books ,Bibles, by burning or burying them.As said in Wisdom 6:10 For they will be made holy who observe holy things in holiness, and those who have been taught them will find a defense. so we need to give due respect, reverence and veneration to the Bible as the Church teaches and not just cutting out pages of the bible ,as some are not aware how to depose Holy Bibles ? will suggest such fate.rather than burning and burying them, you can use stickers, posters cards ,ready made bible quotes.

so we give reverence ,we know as Church gives equal importance to the Bible or in other words the Church venerates the scriptures ,as she venerates the Lord’s Body as in ( CCC [103] For this reason, the Church has always venerated the Scriptures as she venerates the Lord’s Body. She never ceases to present to the faithful the bread of life, taken from the one table of God’s Word and Christ’s Body.66) Revelation 19:13 He is clothed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is called The Word of God.
