My 21 year old son really likes Frank Sinatra. His favorite singer. Along with a bunch of people who I wouldn’t recognize, rappers or some such.
I remember Gunsmoke, Fulton Sheen, and the Ed Sullivan show, but it’s not a subject I ever discuss with contemporaries. We are bonded more over events like the moon landing, the assassinations of the Kennedys and Martin Luther King, and the race riots like Selma.
Everyone should know who a few key figures were, but past that it scarcely matters. I mentioned Jack Paar (the Tonight Show '57 to '62) the other day, and was surprised when no one recognized the name. It’s like not knowing who Jay Letterman is. However, I never watch any of those shows, so it really doesn’t matter.
