Do you all think that it would be at all appropriate to attend daily mass in a road cycling kit (jersey and shorts)? I know this is without a doubt pushing the boundaries of modesty in mass. Normally I would wear at least a collared shirt to even go to a church (mass, reconciliation, adoration, etc) so this is pretty far outside my comfort zone to consider.

Context: there’s a parish that has 8am mass right along one of my favorite cycling routes. I’m always looking for ways to make it to more daily masses, and this would be a great way to fit it into my schedule, especially once the school year starts. But I would absolutely not want to do this at the cost of respect for the liturgy and reverence for Christ in the Eucharist…

I wouldn’t, honestly. Not in the shorts at least. Can you bring some khaki shorts or jeans to change into? Or maybe just bike in regular clothes that day? You don’t really need special clothes to ride a bike anyway, technically 🙂

I see nothing wrong with cycling kit to a weekly mass. I see nothing immodest. I guess there could be exceptions. I think Jesus is glad whenever you can make it. Thanks for your faithfulness! Are you being called to the priesthood? What grade are you in at school?

I don’t think that the people that clean the church really don’t want to see your sweaty behind on their wooden pews.

But since I’m not the one in charge of that, maybe you can ask them?

What was sugested: change into something less form fitting if you can. Only takes a minute to slip on shorts or pants.

Many people cycle from the suburbs to work downtown and change before going to their office. Just throw a pair of pants and nicer shirt over the cycling stuff and go in. Is it even really necessary to be all decked out in that just to go for a ride?

Man…I thought this was going to be about my dilemma…going to daily mass with a limited wardrobe…and figuring out how to cycle through said limited wardrobe…

I keep wondering if people have noticed my shirt rotation? 🤔

I wear jeans and my favorite Snoopy t-shirt often…haven’t been struck by a priest or lightening yet…

You may find a Burberry coat at the thrift store in your price range.

Definitely good suggestions! I’m sure I will be able to stuff a pair of at least loose gym shorts in my jersey pockets. Maybe I’ll try it tomorrow while there’s not many people around for our summer. ☺️

For those wondering, the clothing actually does make a pretty huge difference on a 20+ mile road bike ride. I started relatively recently and was amazed how much getting things out of my pockets and a chamois pad between my seat and myself affected my ability to ride, especially for distances.

Thank you for the honesty and good ideas. Like I said, the last thing I would want to do is be disrespectful. To God or to the parish staff!

Thanks for your interest! I’m a second year graduate student and a relatively recent (adult) convert. I’m presently in a good relationship with an excellent and virtuous Catholic woman. I’m definitely being intentional in discerning marriage, but I know that discernment is an ongoing process until the relevant sacrament. Prayers for my vocation are always appreciated!

I think it’s wonderful that you want to make Daily Mass a part of your life, whether you wear cycling clothes or not.

This may vary by region. When I lived in South Florida, this was more common at weekday Mass. Where I live now, not so much.

I used to be a bicyclist and attended daily Mass in my outfit, though I wore regular loose shorts, rather than the tighter bicycle shorts. This seemed to work better.

Wear what you can to make it to Daily Mass.
Do not let the opinions of others keep you from Mass.

I see many people, in all manners of dress for Daily Mass, from grungy work clothes to business casual, not a big deal.

Here is your answer. cargo style cycling shorts.

Also available in long pants.

Cycle on, my friend.

That is certainly a difference image than what I had in my head- a sweaty guy in lycra spandex.
