After a miscarriage where the pregnancy ends before 10 weeks and all the fetal tissue is not expelled a D&C is often performed. What is done with the fetal tissue? Is it to be buried? What is the moral position of the church?

I don’t believe that the Church has specific rulings on burial of children loss to miscarriage. I’ve heard of stillborn children being given simple funerals or prayer services and a burial, but I’ve never heard of how early miscarriages are handled.

My husband and I decided prior to having children that should we loose a child to miscarriage, we would hope to have the remains cremated, but I don’t know if that would have been possible or not.

Hopefully someone can give you a more official answer. In any case, if you’re suffering a miscarriage, my prayers are with you.

I also don’t believe the Chuch has an official ruling on the issue. I would assume that since life begins at conception, the same rules apply as a traditional funeral as far as burial/cremation goes.

I had a D&C after a miscarriage about 2 and a half years ago. I had the D&C at a Catholic hospital. The baby was buried.
