Da Vinci Code hype?

even as a protestant, I’ve never understood the hype about the da vinci code and what ‘threat’ it seems to pose to christianity. I find it ironic that Dan Brown’s FICTION novel has caused so many books written to debunk the theory Dan Brown puts together in his FICTION novel.

I mean, it is fiction. What is the big deal over it?

The hype has to do with those who believed Dan Brown’s book to be factual.

The doctor my wife worked for, read the book and accepted it as gospel(small “g”) and it helped feed her anti-Catholic positions.

From my experience, it was not Catholic’s who attacked the Da Vinci Code, but rather, those who read the book, attempted to use it in their attacks against the Church.
They failed and are now looking for new material.

Not to mention the fact that Dan Brown is one of the worst writers I’ve ever read (and I only read a few pages). My writing teacher, who is a bestseller in three countries in Europe and whose first language is not even English, said that he read 30 pages of *Angels and Demons *and couldn’t read anymore. He said that life was too short for that kind of trash!

A fictional novel, yes, but the fact that Brown himself believes this to be the truth and purports much of his findings as fact is the danger.
There are many who are not strong in their faith and are easliy swayed. As JimR-OCDS indicated, I, too have spoken with many people who believe it as fact. On the media circuit, Brown said:

"I began as a skeptic. As I started researching The Da Vinci Code, I really thought I would disprove a lot of this theory about Mary Magdalene and holy blood and all of that. I became a believer."

This is a powerful statement to thoise who are seeking the truth and are not strong in their beliefs. A charlatain like Dan Brown comes along with a fictional book - puportedly based on what he deems to be fact because of his “research”. Many people can* and have been fooled.
**Also, remember - the film is being directed by Ron Howard and starring Tom Hanks. That is about as powerful a cocktail as Hollywood can mix.

As far as it being a threat to the Church - there can never be an REAL threat to the Church. Remember what Jesus said:

". . . and on this rock I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."
