I don’t know if this is the right forum to post this. This is an idea I’ve been thinking about for a week or so.

Dan Brown in his novel Da Vinci Code makes up the idea about the Church and its true history. I’ve read other things that say Jesus got married and even had children.

To us it would be a major blow to find out that Jesus was not crucified. However, in Jesus time how shocking would it have been for him to marry. I don’t know for sure but I don’t think anyone then would have been shocked. Jesus was Jewish and I don’t think his getting married would’ve shocked anyone. His disciples didn’t know what was going to happen so they weren’t expecting his crucifixion and resurrection. So they wouldn’t have made anything up.

In Jesus time there was no reason to hide the truth and create a story. If jesus had married then I don’t think his disciples would have found it terrible and made up something else.

Jesus is both God and man and He never married. That is dogma of the Holy Catholic Church. For Catholics, that is a fact.

Dan Brown is a nut case author who will writes BS about anything and insult anything in order to make money.

Enough said.

That is quite reasonable thinking. This, along with the absence of historical evidence that Jesus was married, and his espousal to the Bride of Christ, the Church, we as Catholics have learned much profound theology in the order of marriage and love.

Dan Brown is an author who writes fiction. Fiction is, by definition, not true. I don’t know why some folks keep expecting otherwise.

The most reprehensible thing about this novel is that many people cannot discern fiction from truth because they are pre-disposed to anti-catholicism.
The mass media, especially television may or may not be anti- Catholic, but does promulgate secularism, has touted this book far and wide. The particularly nasty thing about this all is that no one has called the author to task for his Catholic bashing; not only in this opus, but in other books of his.
I guess Catholic bashing is the last American prejudice that no one gets called to task, or is punished for…

:hmmm: It is called Fictory or Hiction 😃 no really “Historical Fiction” is the term and the problem arises when someone wants to pass that as “Real History”.

Of course much of the blame also falls on our current culture where we create illiterate masses that then read that and cannot discern what is what.

THAT is the real issue me thinks

:twocents: YMMV

I know the novel “Da Vinci Code” is fiction. I am not overly knowledgeable about the Catholic faith but I know what Dan Brown writes is not true.

What I’m saying is he is actually looking at history from the perspective of someone in the 21st Century. As Christians we would be horrified if reputable historians produced evidence that Jesus wasn’t cruficied. That’s because it would trun on its head what we have held to be true for 2000+ years.

However, he’s assuming that 2000 years ago the apostles decided that if Jesus had lived and married that would be something bad and they needed to make up a false story. What I’m proposing is that in the society in which Jesus lived his apostles wouldn’t have been horrified if Jesus had given up his public ministry and married. Because this wouldn’t have seen unusual or horrific to them they would not have made up something else. They could have carried on with his ministry. They didn’t and wouldn’t have invented a story of a man being crucified, died, buried, and then rose from the dead.

In other words what we believe is true because there is just no reason for the apostles to make anything up.

I read the book and saw the movie. I only saw it as a fictional work.

In regards to your quote. Over the years, prior to the Da Vinci Code, I would think about whether Jesus ever married and had children. Especially if we were studying about the customs of the time and how most Jewish men were married way before the age of 30. If I found out tomorrow that it had been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that he had been married it wouldn’t affect my faith in any way. I do want to point out that I do agree with the Church teachings that He did not marry.

There is a documentary on Netflix called Bloodline. I watched it and spent quite a bit of time :nope: The shaking of my head is probably why I had to see my chiropractor the next day.

For those who love the Da Vinci Code… I would like to reccomend these additional groundbreaking epics:

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.

The Cat In The Hat.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.

Curious George Gets a Medal.

All are masterpieces of literature on par with the Da Vinci Code… 👍

I surmise the reason is two-fold. 1) Because in The Da Vinci Code book, the introduction makes the claim about all historical and architectural depictions or some such in the book are historically accurate; and 2) Because there is a strain of society that is ripe and ready to believe negative things about the Church without requiring a foundation for those beliefs.

The book “Da Vinci Code” is fiction. I believe what the Catholic church teaches. If his book were true it would affect all our faiths. The crucifixion-death-resurrection is the basis of our religion. The storyline in “Da Vinci Code” says Jesus married and had children and that the church made the crucifixion-death-resurrection up. But, that makes no sense because if he had married and had children his apostles would not have thought oh we can’t have this. I tell you what we’ll come up with this. So if Jesus has married it wouldn’t have been covered up. We might have had a Christian church but based on other facts.

I think some people believe Da Vinci Code because it is very much marketed as if it were fact not fiction. It also puts the Catholic Church as the centre of a conspiracy theory, which lots of non-Catholics will love. It also puts Opus Dei in a bad light. That will please many, including some catholics I reckon.

In breaking news, there were major earthquakes in France and the U.S., as both Jules Verne and Dr. Seuss turned over in their graves at being mentioned in the same breath as Dan “I write the same plot in all my books” Brown. 😃

as you open the book Dan Brown tells people it a fictional book.lolololol…why do people think that star wars is real aswell?
