Daily Devotional Help

My wife and I would like to begin daily devotions with our children. I was wondering if you could recommend some books that may help us in this area. One thought I had was a book that perhaps had the readings for each day and then a discussion of these readings in context with our lives. Any ideas?

We do both morning and evening prayers with our children and have since they were very little. Our current resource is the publication Magnificat. It is a monthly booklet with the daily Mass readings as will as modified morning, evening, and night prayer from the LOTH. In addition to that is also contains a meditation each day from the writings of the Saints and other scholars and churchmen (Benedict XVI and JP II for example).

During Lent and Advent we read through the Gospels or another book and know that the kids are older we’ll have discussions of how what we’ve read applies to our lives. When they were younger, we’d read from a children’s Bible and say some simple prayers centered around ligting the Advent wreath or adding to our rice bowl during Lent.

Mrs. Sally, thank you for mentioning the Magnificat. I had never heard of this.

I don’t have children, and unfortunately do not do a daily study with my husband. However, in my own personal daily studies, I read through the daily readings and also read about one of the Saints each day in the book Lives of the Saints by Father Alban Butler. I think teaching children about the early Christians, their devotions, triumphs, and struggles would be very rewarding.
