Daily Mass for Priests

There was a time when priests were required to say Mass daily (thus the side altars) and were only allowed to say two Masses a day except under unusual circumstances.

Was this true and is it still valid?

I believe that priests are still required to say Mass everyday. If you look in the Roman Missal, both Pre- and Post-Vatican II, there are instructions for saying Mass “without a congregation.”

Priest must still celebrate the Mass daily. The big difference is they are now able to concelebrate – no more rooms filled with priests and bishops celebrating the Mass on tiny altars during conferences.

Same with the number Masses/day, but bination still requires certain circumstances that require it.

Priests and Deacons are required to pray the Daily Office, but Mass is not required. Daily Mass has never been required, though most Latin Priests do try and say Mass daily.

Most Eastern Parishes (Catholic and Orthodox) don’t have daily Mass as a tradition.

Priests are usually limited to 1 Mass per day, 3 on Sunday if there is pastoral need.
