Sometimes I am the reader at daily mass and I cover the first reading and the responsorial psalm. When I get to the responsorial psalm, I announce it first by saying “Our responsorial psalm…” and then follow the lectionary. My question is this. Should I announce it to the congregation that we have come to the responsorial psalm or should I just say the response that the people say?

This is easy on Sunday’s since the responsorial psalm is sung by a cantor with music so you know when you get to this part of the Mass.

I think it’s more elegant to leave out the introductory words. People who go to daily Mass know what they’re doing. I would say the response and then make a subtle hand gesture to indicate that they should repeat it, then make the same gesture whenever their turn to say it comes around again.

The one thing to do, as a number do not have the words in front of them, is :

Clearly and slowly annunciate it, so that everyone can hear it and have a chance of remembering it so they can repeat it.

when i read, i leave out the introductory part, i just think it flows better… but, i see no reason or problem that you can’t do it either way… do what makes you feel comfortable, or better yet, see what your priest thinks… Peace… 👍

Our parish prints a card each month, maybe 4 x 6" listing the day and date, and the response for each weekday. That way it’s easy to know when the responsorial psalm has begun, to know what exactly is the response, and to remember it throughout the psalm.

I usually find that a little pause after the first reading followed with

***The Responsorial Psalm (pause) The Response is… ***then read the response!!

does the trick for me. After all we announce the First Reading and the Second and the Gospel! The arrival of the Psalm should be announced:)
