I have a question regarding two different sets of readings prescribed for the same day. This past Thursday, there was an option to use the readings for Thursday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time or the readings for Thanksgiving Day. My readers’ workbook has three readings for Thanksgiving Day listed - an Old Testament, New Testament, and Gospel reading. Of course, for the regular weekday, only two readings were listed - an OT and Gospel reading, just like any other weekday. I know that for Sundays and Holy Days there must be three readings proclaimed, but what is the formula for special votive Masses such as the Mass for Thanksgiving?

Now, for special Masses such as Thanksgiving and if the priest wished to use the readings for the Mass for Thanksgiving instead of the readings of the day, does there have to be three readings chosen from the Mass for Thanksgiving, or can the priest decide just to do two readings from the Mass for Thanksgiving?

If the Mass of the day is being celebrated, then the two readings from that Mass, along with all other proper collects, are used. If the Mass is for Thanksgiving Day, then the approved readings for that Mass–(all three of them, plus the psalm–are used, along with the proper collects.

Thank you!
