Daily Mass v. Work

This poll sort of goes along with another thread I started that concerns a conflict I have right now. My question is would you choose one job over another if it meant you could be closer to your parish to attend daily mass (which you really miss doing), adoration, etc. or would you rather be closer to home?
 
A lot would depend on the job and how it fulfilled my needs and the needs of my family.
 
In my line of work, positions were very limited even before the economy went down. I’m very lucky to have a parish nearby that offers an early Mass each day (6:45 am) so that I can go when I choose and still get to work on time. I think my priority at this point would be to get the job and then find a church nearby that I could go to for daily mass when I can.

This poll isn’t designed very well.

There are millions of Catholics that cannot go to daily Mass because it is either not offered or it is offered at a time when we are working. Most people cannot leave work. (some can but most cannot)

I would go to daily Mass but I am taking care of sick people during that time. The chapel is only 400 yards from me but I cannot leave. It is at a time I cannot attend. (by the way the time is 8 AM which is perfect for most people). My mothers parish only has one daily mass per week a 1200 noon.

The next avail daily mass is 30 miles away in another “town”.

My mother would have to travel 50 miles for daily Mass.

Well, all other things being equal then taking a job that would allow you to attend daily mass would seem to be the best thing.

But those other things are never equal, are they? The one “other” you mention is being closer to home. In and of itself that doesn’t seem to be a reason. What do you gain by being closer to home? More sleep? Less travel distance so you save fuel? More time with family? Being closer to family members who may need you? Less overall stress?

You really have to look at the other things and also consider if there are any other parishes that would allow you to attend Mass or adoration (even if they are not your usual/preferred parish).

Sorry for not designing it to your preference. I realize that not everyone can attend daily Mass for whatever reason. As of right not I can’t because of a job where I cannot leave. I could attend if I went back to my old job. The closest parish to where I live is 30 min away and that is the one I attend. I don’t live in a heavily Catholic area. The poll was simply to ask if you could have the chance to change jobs where you would be able to attend daily Mass, would you do it or would you keep the job closer to home. I’ll try better next time. :rolleyes:

Well, if I had to give an extra hour a day of travel time to get to a job because I could attend daily Mass, I would consider how that would affect my family. If I had children to attend to, or limited time with my husband, or it would disrupt the family schedule (such as mealtimes, homework times, getting kids off to school or getting them home) or put a burden upon the family finances, I would probably take the job closer to home. But if I were single and didn’t have anyone else to consider, I might take the job where I could attend daily Mass. I think, in the overall scheme of things, while God is first in our lives, and He should be, He also expects us to fulfill our earthly obligations, which are given to us by Him. So it depends on the circumstances of your life, and where your priorities should be at the stage of life you are in.
 
Are you determined to attend daily mass at your HOME parish? I am able to attend adoration during my lunch hour (when I take a lunch. ha!) at a church near my work. Not my home parish, but any port in a storm, right? Masstimes.org lists when various churches have adoration and daily mass.
Just a thought.
Maybe you can have your cake and eat it too. 🙂
 
It drives me a little crazy that our parish’s daily mass is @ 8:00am–before some of my kids even start school. Even 1 hour later would make all the difference in the world between NEVER getting there and going several times/week.
 
I drive 40 min each way to the school where I teach. We have a beautiful chapel, daily Mass and monthly adoration and confessions.

It’s worth the drive. 👍
 
Fortunatley, there is a parish near my workplace that has a noon Mass.

I go as often as I can.

The county I live in and teach in does not have a Catholic church. My home parish is the one I’m talking about in my post. There are 4 Catholic parishes close to me and they are all 30-40 minutes away from my house & current job. My home parish was about 5-10 minutes from my old job.

That’s funny, because I have the opposite problem. The Church near me has 7:30 Mass, and if it started at 7:20, I’d have enough time to go and back to campus in time for class (I’m in college). Those ten minutes make all the differences, and it just doesn’t quite fit.
 
I wish that at least one parish in our city offered a vesper (evening) Mass at least once a week.

Is there a reason that more parishes don’t offer these?

I assume it’s mainly due to lack of interest, and I can certainly understand why most people do not wish to go out in the evening to church. There is so much going on in the evening that demands our time, especially if there are children. And of course, there’s the old Boob Tube!

There might be a safety issue, too, although it’s often darker at 6:30 A.M. than 6:30 P.M.!
