I went to Daily Mass a couple times this week at church. I haven’t been in a while, and really while I’m off in the winter I should be going as much as I can. Two things happened that were very encouraging to me.
The first day I went, while in mass I noticed that there were a lot of young people there. I go to a student parish at a college, but I was suprised to see so many college kids in mass, especially young girls in mass. After mass on the way out, one of them came up to me and asked me who I was, introduced herself, etc. I just told her I was a parishoner and just came to mass that day. She said that she hadn’t seen me before, and that it’s good to see new faces at daily mass, and that I should come back and attend more often. I was astounded. Not only because this college girl, who while at the age that most college girls are out doing all kinds of worldly things, was attending daily mass. But also because she took time to talk to me, express her happiness to see more people in mass, and encourage me to come back again. Truly, she was an encouragement to me and it made me happy to know that there are some in the next generation with such a zeal for the church. And the thing was, she wasn’t alone. There were at least 4 other girls and several young men in mass with her.
And on a side note, it made me wish I had been going to mass as a college student to find out if there were girls like that when I was in school!
The second thing that I found encouraging was that there were nuns at the mass on Thursday. Real life nuns in actual habits! I know that sounds crazy, but I don’t get to see real nuns very often. We don’t have them at our parish. Growing up, there were always a couple at least assigned to our parish that lived in the rectory. And even then, they didn’t wear the full habit. To see actual nuns in mass in full habits was excellent. To me, the are an encouragement and an example to show that one can lead a full life in the Lord, no matter what the outside world says to the contrary.
