Happy Solemnity of Saints Peter & Paul!

I was received into the Church Sunday on the Feast of Corpus Christi. Since then, I have been receiving communion every day at daily Mass. I have visited several parishes, but none of these parishes sing except for the Alleluia and scarce other words. Is this the norm for daily Mass? Is there an exception? Maybe I should go to Mass later in the day? :confused:

In general, there is going to be less music and less singing than a Sunday mass, if any at all.

If you’re lucky, you’ll find a priest who sings the “Agnus Dei” which gives the congregation a chance to sing along.

It will probably be the same if you go in the evening.

I happen to go to an evening missa cantata 2x a week, which is awesome.
 
It’s the norm for my Daily Mass. But still, going is so worth it! I love going.
 
Okay. I like that the Mass on a weekday is less “full” than a Sunday Mass. After all, Sunday is the Lord’s Day. I just would love to praise the Lord in song once or twice during the Daily Mass. I end up listening to religious music on my headphones walking to and from Daily Mass. It let’s me rejoice as I make a journey to my Lord.
 
At my parish’s daily Mass, usually the only singing there is is an entrance and recessional hymn that is led by our pastor who quite frankly doesn’t have a good singing voice. Also, the Memorial Acclamation and Doxology and Amen are sung, all three in chant. Sometimes we will chant the Alleluia and Verse Before the Gospel. All of this chanting and singing, though, is led by our pastor who, like I said before, is not a good singer! I hope someday the choir I’m organizing can occasionally sing at daily Masses.

It’s saddening. 😦

Depends where you are.

At the campus college chapel, there’s generally no singing (sometimes the Alleluia/Praise to You before the Gospel, the Holy Holy, the Mystery of Faith, Great Amen, and Lamb of God are sung).

At the Basilica-Cathedral downtown, there’s nearly as much singing as at a Sunday Mass (everything that’s normally sung minus the Psalm, without accompaniment though).
 
At my parish, the following is sung for daily Mass (a capella):
  • Opening Hymn
  • Alleluia (or Gospel Acclamation)
  • Sanctus
At one parish near me, at some of the daily Masses, and all Sunday Masses (all in the OF), the priest sings most of his parts, and the cantor and/or choir sings the gregorian propers in latin from the GR (introit, offertory, communion) in addition to the psalm in english, and the alleluia and verse (both to english chant tones). It’s heavenly, not to mention the ideal for liturgical music! 👍👍👍👍

That’s awesome! I haven’t attended an OF that has music in the morning daily mass. I guess it has to do with whether they can afford to pay a cantor to sing daily.

there is usually only one daily Mass in a parish because there is only one priest and he can celebrate only once. If there is a funeral or wedding scheduled there may be no morning mass for that reason. No it is not common to have music for daily Mass because the music people are usually not free. Here we recite together the entrance antiphon and communion antiphon. If the alleluia is not sung, it is not used at all, but most people can do that a capella
you will also see the creed and gloria are omitted during daily Mass.

Besides on Sundays, the OF Missa Cantata (as it could probably be called) at that parish is only one one or two week days, not every week day. But it probably helps too that the cantor can sing almost all the chants nearly by sight reading. He is awesome!

I also forgot to mention that it is AD ORIENTEM!!
 
My church is blessedly quiet for daily Mass…there is no singing unless it is a Holy Day of Obligation…and then I’m not sure how people are able to sing at 6:30 am.

At another church I attend for Daily Mass, the priest who fills in on Wednesdays will usually sing the Alleluia.

At another, there is an entrance song, the Alleluia is sung, hands are held for the Our Father, hugs are exchanged at the sign of peace with friend and stranger alike, and there is a Communion Song. They make a joyful noise!

Just depends. But Mass is always awesome.

A priest can only celebrate once per day? This past Monday I altar served a funeral and the priest who was saying the Mass also said Mass at night.

With permission from the local ordinary a priest can say 2 Masses in a day as per canon law.

Can. 905 ß1 Apart from those cases in which the law allows him to celebrate or concelebrate the Eucharist a number of times on the same day, a priest may not celebrate more than once a day.

ß2 If there is a scarcity of priests, the local Ordinary may for a good reason allow priests to celebrate twice in one day or even, if pastoral need requires it, three times on Sundays or holy days of obligation.
