After hearing the word of the Lord and receiving his body and blood at Mass, we are exhorted: “Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.” So is that what you do?
Has your time at the table of the Lord helped you live a gospel witness in the world? Or do you walk away wondering just what you “got out of” Mass? Or worse, do you go home feeling just as frustrated or anxious or fearful as when you entered the church?
At the Last Supper—the very first Mass—Peter swore to Jesus: “I will lay down my life for you” (John 13:37). But very soon
afterward, he denied Jesus. For his part, Judas rushed off to
betray Jesus.
Neither disciple seems to have been affected too deeply by what they had just witnessed in the upper room.
Still, for their similarities, these two men’s stories ended in radically different ways.
One succumbed to despair, while the other was brazen enough to hope in Jesus’ mercy. Peter emerged humbled and more deeply aware of his need for God. But Judas couldn’t see any light in his situation, and he gave in to self-condemnation.
This contrast shows us that even those who are caught up in themselves
can be changed if they are open to the Lord just a little bit. Somehow, Jesus’ words and actions at the Last Supper found a way into Peter’s memory, and he was able to draw upon them in his moment of need. Judas, on the other hand, seems to have closed the door long before the meal even began. Having decided before the Passover to betray Jesus, Judas already thought the situation was hopeless. There was nothing left to do now but hand Jesus over.
Easter is only a few days away. But it’s not too late for the Lord to work wonders.
Who knows? Maybe a short phrase at Mass on Sunday will shine a light in your heart. Maybe the sight of the Host elevated will reveal some new aspect of Jesus’ love. Maybe a warm greeting during the exchange of peace will minister Jesus’ welcome to you. It’s never too late for Jesus to work—so long as we give him the slightest opportunity!
“Jesus, draw me deeper into your love this week.
May your body and blood pierce my heart.
Jesus, I want to acknowledge you
as my Lord and my God!”
