As he preached to the crowd on Pentecost Sunday, Peter touched on several major points, but to him the most crucial point by far was the resurrection of Jesus. In fact, whenever and wherever the gospel is preached, it is the resurrection that steals the show. The effects of our sin are clearly seen in the way Jesus was put to death; by embracing the cross, Jesus also revealed the sacrificial nature of God’s love. Yet acknowledging our sin and embracing the cross are as nothing without the triumphant power of the resurrection.
This is good news indeed! No wonder we sang alleluia so much on Easter Sunday! But why settle for proclamation of the resurrection only at Easter? For it is in this miracle that the power of sin is defeated. It is this miracle that makes sense out of the suffering of the cross.
Every Sunday commemorates the day when our Savior rose. Every Sunday beckons us to set our sights on the triumph of the resurrection—ours just as much as Jesus’.
When was the last time you announced the resurrection? When sharing with others about your faith, theological arguments may be necessary, but*** the true power comes from telling how Jesus is alive and has revealed himself to you. It comes when you tell people that everyone is invited to an intimate relationship with him.*** It comes when you recall the encounters you have had with the risen Lord and share what you have seen and heard.
“Lord Jesus, I rejoice that you are risenSo get clear on the gospel message. Look at the Mass readings during this Easter season. What is emphasized? That Jesus Christ became man; that he suffered, died, and was buried; and that he rose again to an indestructible life! This is what Peter proclaimed, and it converted thousands. This is what you can proclaim as well—and you will see lives change!
and have poured your grace upon me!
Now let your life-changing power
flow to the whole world.
Strengthen me, Jesus, to bear witness
to your resurrection.”
