Yesterday, we saw how the preaching of the gospel is at its heart a proclamation of the power of God—the power that raised Jesus from the dead. Well, today we get a picture of what this power looks like for us. After all, we don’t see everyday people like us rising from the dead and walking among us—or do we?

The people were cut to the heart by Peter’s preaching: God had raised up the Lord of Life whom they had crucified
. Having been confronted with the reality of their sin and the opportunity for salvation through the risen Christ, they asked, “Brothers what shall we do?” (Acts 2:37).

“Repent and be baptized . . . for the forgiveness of your sins” (Acts 2:38). Thus is the power of God clearly seen, when complex creations such as us human beings are restored to him through simple acts like repentance and baptism.

Yes it can be hard—and even bitter
—to face our sins and turn away from them in confession. But repentance is also sweet, since it leads to a joy unlike any other. What can compare to the experience of unmerited mercy as the all-holy, eternal Son of God floods our unworthy hearts with his own mercy and love?

Jesus is at work in us, breaking the chains of addictions, resentments, and indifference. He brings peace into our hearts and overcomes the anxieties that beset us. Instead of competition and fear, his compassion can govern how we view ourselves and how we treat one another.
Reconciliation, joy, freedom, peace, compassion
—these are the*** natural signs*** of someone who has been “born anew” in the life of the risen Jesus. Proclaim this gospel of power to yourself during the course of the day. Tell it to the birds and the trees. Preach it to your heart when you are sad, burdened, or afraid. Preach it to your mind when you are confused or indifferent. Your memory and imagination will be set free to lift you into the presence of God. Preach the gospel, then watch as the power of God is released!

“Lord Jesus, your resurrection is the foundation of my new life. You are enthroned in glory,

pouring out your powerful grace into me,
making me able to live
through you.”
